Reykjavik (Iceland)

Intro ~~~~ I have just returned from a family holiday in Reykjavik, the most northerly capital in the world. No one in our family is suited to the heat and we are not drawn by beach holidays. We were attracted by the reported beauty of the city and Iceland promised adventure with its volcanic ... Read review

Reykjavik: Cold Weather and Hot Springs

Advantages: Beatiful, crowd-free, unspoiled
Disadvantages: Cold (just wrap up warm) and expensive

...edge of the Arctic Circle, Reykjavik sits on the south west coast of Iceland, oh so many miles north of Scotland in the north Atlantic Ocean. It is rapidly increasing in size, mostly from people migrating here from other parts of the country. Iceland is very sparsely populated, two thirds of a total of only 300,000 Icelanders live in the Reykjavik area. This was one of the most striking aspects of our visit to me, the fact that there are just so ...
...The mountains and hills around Reykjavik make for a dramatic backdrop - in particular the mountainous island Videy which sits over the harbour of slate grey water, which received a dusting of snow part way through our visit just to add to the drama. You don't have to go too far out of the city to experience the volcanic landscape of Iceland: Geysir (where you can see the geyser from which all other geysers take their name), the dramatic Gullfoss ... more

Advantages: Cool, Cultured, Spectacular natural surroundings
Disadvantages: The National Museum has been closed all year, Very expensive

Reykjavik is probably the coolest city in the world - and not just because of its position as the most northerly capital, either. The geographical isolation of the city has given it a virtual license to be different, creative, quirky and ground breaking in many areas, a strangeness that is mirrored perfectly in the surreal natural beauty of the surrounding countryside. But before I plunge onwards with my review, let me just make it clear where I ...
...the city is on. Reykjavik is on Iceland, smaller of the islands and mostly green in cover - it is often mixed up with Greenland, the larger of the two that is mostly covered in ice. I'm glad we got that sorted out. ;-) But why did I decide to go there of all places? Well, I think it is fair to say that when it comes to holidays I am not overly fond of hot places and nor do I like the thought of lying around on a beach for an entire week. I am what ...

Expensive but spectacular

Advantages: nice looking, friendly people, cool as anything
Disadvantages: VERY expensive

I went to Reykjavik for 5 nights in Autumn 1998 with my boyfriend and was well impressed. We had been inspired by seeing a programme about the making of Bjork's Homogenic album, which musically seems to sum up the atmosphere of Iceland. We got a package deal with flights and hotel (with breakfast) for about £500 each, which was fairly cheap. We stayed at Hotel Reykjavik (the smaller, second branch) which was clean, friendly, comfortable, nice big ...
...in the virtually uninhabited interior. Reykjavik on the other hand can actually become a little bit dull. I think a long weekend would have covered it. We really enjoyed walking around, taking in the culture, but without a lot of money to spend we didn't get any idea of the club or pub scene. The architecture is fascinating with their brightly coloured roofs and corrugated-iron frontages - Most Icelanders build their own houses and if you peer inside ...

Capital of Cool

Advantages: Unique and exciting city
Disadvantages: It is very expensive

The area surrounding Reykjavik is one of the most astounding and beautiful locations in Europe. By touring the route known as the Golden Circle it is possible to see stunning scenery, active gysers and inactive volcanos. You can see the location where America and Europe are literally being pulled apart and the land is sinking by several centimetres a year as a result. You can visit fantastic waterfalls where the water flows directly from a distant ...
...amount of thermal energy in the rocks it is built on, they can grow their own bananas. Guided tours of this route are usually available from the airport or your hotel, expect to pay around 40 - 50 quid for a full day out. The city has few large buildings, indeed the largest structure seems to be the Cathedral tower. This is situated close to the Leifur Eriksson hotel, which wouldn't be a bad choice for your stay. The bustling main street is home ...

Reykjavik

Advantages: Great Value, wonderful winter feel
Disadvantages: It can be cold!

You may think that Reyjavik, capital city of Iceland, is suitable only for a summer visit. Yet the city has a magic even in the winter months. Sure it snows a lots, but it is mostly a gentle, christmas snow that adds to the charm of an aalready beautiful city. Just imagine relaxing in warm lagoons cut into the side of hills, or drinking a beer in the snow, whilst enjoying a warming jaccuzi. What's more flights to Iceland (with the national carrier ...

Iceland, Iceland, King of Countries

Advantages: Friendly, Clean, Comfortable
Disadvantages: Not cheap, Located in the Busines District

In September 2006 my boyfriend took me on a surprise holiday. We got up at 3am and headed off to the airport and I still had no idea where we were heading. With this in mind I?d packed clothes for every occasion. My boyfriend had told me I?d probably need a jumper, but didn?t go into much more detail. So when I got to the airport he handed me a package and when I unwrapped it I saw a guidebook to Iceland in my hands! I was sooo excited! I had an amazing time in Iceland and I thought I?d review the hotel we stayed in as I?ve read a few reviews online since and they seem rather unduly negative to me. ~~First Impressions~~ When we arrived in Iceland we caught a bus Reykjavik and they delivered us right to the door of our hotel. They asked where we were staying and my boyfriend said Park Inn Iceland ? we were soon corrected that ...

Review of Park Inn Island Hotel, Reykjavik

Cool capital

Advantages: Unusual destination, great scenery
Disadvantages: Very expensive to eat and drink

Apparently it's very chic to visit Reykjavik these days, but it was simple curiosity that attracted me to a 3-night break in the city. The promise of geysers and waterfalls was enticing, and the deal was pretty cheap (arranged via the Guardian newspaper). The reality? Reykjavik is well worth a visit, but it might not quite conform to all your expectations. For a start, it's a very small city. Iceland's population is tiny anyway, but its capital (though by far the largest settlement in the country) is cosy by UK standards. It's a bit like a frontier town (comparisons with the TV show 'Northern Exposure' constantly sprang to mind), and it's not a beautiful city by any means, but what the heck? You are within easy reach of spectacular landscape, an endless vista of volcanic eruptions and techtonic plates ripping through the countryside ...

Review of Reykjavik (Iceland)

Iceland. Fantastic!

Advantages: Sight seeing, Warm welcome, Relaxing
Disadvantages: Shopping

On deciding the destination for our trip we done the usual, search for the best flight, on the internet and, to our surprise, found BA to be the cheapest at the time. Flying from Gatwick the cost for 2 people, return, 4 nights was £161.40. Some people might have had bad experiences but I can suggest secure parking with APH various prices from £18 for 5 days with a courtesy coach to and from the airport. Somewhere to stay was the next job. We booked a hotel 'Artic Comfort Hotel Vik' in Reykjavik. Cost 4 nights £243.03 Next step was to find a suitable hire car. After asking some friends for advice who had previously been to the island we decided upon a four wheel drive Suzuki Jimny. Once again back to the internet. Europcar via Atlaschoice.com was the best site we found and the Suzuki was booked, we thought. The cost ...
