The area surrounding Reykjavik is one of the most astounding and beautiful locations in Europe. By touring the route known as the Golden Circle it is possible to see stunning scenery, active gysers and inactive volcanos. You can see the location where America and Europe are literally being pulled apart and the land is sinking by several centimetres a year as a result. You can visit fantastic waterfalls where the water flows directly from a distant glacier and you can visit towns where, due to the amount of thermal energy in the rocks it is built on, they can grow their own bananas. Guided tours of this route are usually available from the airport or your hotel, expect to pay around 40 - 50 quid for a full day out.
The city has few large buildings, indeed the largest structure seems to be the Cathedral tower. This is situated close to the Leifur Eriksson hotel, which wouldn't be a bad choice for your stay.
The bustling main street is home to many boutiques and shops interspersed with bars that sell what must be the most expensive alcohol in the world. A good place to try is "Cafe Bar", which is part owned by Damon Albarn from Blur. It is quite cosy but worth a visit.
The food in Iceland is not as bad as it sounds, the Fish and Lamb are exceptional, however, the Puffin can be a little chewy. If you don't mind what you eat then Whale meat is readily available, I didn't try this while I was there but, if youdon't mind eating these creatures then this is one of the few places in Europe you can try it.
The last piece of advice concerns travel to and from the airport, do not get a cab they are very expensive, instead buy a ticket for the bus from inside the airport terminal, this will cost you about a third of the price of a taxi and it will also take you direct to your hotel door.
