I went to Rhodes in the year of 2002, another family holiday! This was a late deal.
I found that actually the only thing that dissapointed me about this holiday was that, when I stepped of the plane from the airport I was attacked by this sudden burst of humidity and I hated it, from then on I knew this is what it was going to be like throughout the holiday, but I didn't let it get to me too much!
I stayed in a town called Theologos, in a hotel called summer dream, it wasn't the best i must say, but it was nice enough, the rooms got very hot during the night and this got very uncomfortable, but hey its not the hotel we are reviewing its the destination. So Rhodes, it is a fairly small destination, beautiful scenery. The town i stayed in was quite far away from any main shops and local houses, and so we ended up hiring out a car, this was fairly cheap also.
I have to go exploring when i visit a foreign country i have to able to witness remains of the history of the country and anything that it has to offer, and so the first place we stopped of at was the old town, I found that this was one of the busiest towns on the island, alot of the shops were selling gifts and antiques, i visited a beautiful shop which was filled with collectables and paintings, probably one of my favourites shops.
Just out from the old town, was the place where the colossus of Rhodes stood, high into the cloudes, what is left now are 2 stags, where his feet would be, this i was amazed to see as the statue must have been very big and would have taken a very long time to build. Near there was also an underwater aquarium, which had a few different species but not a great deal.
The next stop in the week was the butterfly village, this place is enchanted, a long drive up the hill, quite scary as there isn't much of a road and the drop is far, not meaning to put anyone off driving up there, but once you get to the butterfly village thats all forgotten, as you walk along the walkway, you can see hidden on the rocks are a rare specie of a butterfly, they are everywhere, a fantastic sight to see and i would suggest that you go here if you visit Rhodes! I also suggest that you take alot of water with you as walking around in Rhodes you get very hot and dehydrated.
Next stop, the ostrich farm, I had never seen an ostrich before and so this would be another new experience for me, there was a huge amount running around, and got plenty of pictures to show that, i think i took too many actually, should have saved the film for other occasions. We stayed for lunch at the farm and as i looked up and down the menu I was suddenly aware that on almost every dish was ostrich meat, I am not one to stay away from trying new things, but from just being outside with an ostrich i wasn't intending to eat one of them, and so i decided i wasn't going to eat it.
I think though the most exciting part of the holiday was going to Faliraki, this is the club scene in Rhodes, well known across part of the world. The shops here are more modern and sell more of the items that you would buy in your local town in your own country. We visited a waterpark, called 'Aqualand' there are loads of huge water slides and other rides and pools, one thing that i really liked was a huge bucket that was placed at the top of what looked like a cliff, and as it filled up with water it would tip until it was full and it tipped all the way forward and came splashing down on anybody standing underneath it, this was very funny to watch.
So even though there isn't really that much to do at Rhodes, you can certainly have a great time with the facilities and places that are there. The beaches are clean and pleasent, if the weather is hot then the sand will be very hot, which can be a bit dissapointing for freedom on the beach, unless you don't mind the heat.
Lisa - I loved Rhodes to - we stayed in the tiny village ok Haraki and had a fantastic week - i'm trying to persuade my parner to try Rhodes as Falaraki put him off!!!
