My review is not about Rhodes, in general, but rather one particular resort we had the misfortune to stay in.
My son and I flew out to stay at the Rodos VillageMitsis (Kiotari, Rhodes) for the Easter break, 2005, as part of an all-inclusive package holiday.
We took a late evening flight out to Rhodes direct from London Gatwick and arrived at the Rodos Village Mitsis around 3.15am. The hotel was deserted save for two reception staff and so the scrum to the front of the queue started, with a plane-load of tired holidaymakers - mostly families with small children - desperate for their beds. There were limited seating facilities in the very grand foyer - designed mainly for aesthetic appeal rather than functionality - and there were no welcome drinks (even a glass of water would have been much appreciated after the journey from the airport).
The check-in procedure was a relatively
lengthy process. There were no boards announcing when breakfast was to be served, nor where there little leaflets given out - as is common with most all-inclusive deals - detailing what was included in our package.
Luckily my son & I were one of the first families to check-in; we then had to find our way 'through the maze of the hotel to find our room. The lift next to reception didn't work so we trudged up two flights of stairs with heavy cases, not really sure where we were heading as instructions from the reception staff were hurried and vague. The stairwells echoed chronically and as we reached the second floor, we realised we could hear other holidaymakers making their way up the back of the hotel to the chalets. The corridors were very clean, pristine white, yet we were very self-conscious of the noise our shoes were making (carrying our suitcases because of the echoes).
Little did we know then but not only where we the first holidaymakers to stay in the hotel, but the Rodos Village Mitsis was the ONLY hotel open on the island at that time! If only we had been advised of this at the time of booking …
We got to our rooms which were very clean. The room felt very cold but we were unable to fathom out how to make the aircon units throw out anything other than freezing cold air and there were no tea/coffee facilities. We climbed into our beds and shivered under the one blanket provided and tried to fall asleep despite the bangs and crashes from our fellow holidaymakers making their way across/through the hotel to their own rooms.
After about an hour of restlessness, we heard loud shouts & crashes and realised that the resort was in total darkness. Thankfully we were safely tucked up in bed but the power-cut lasted a couple of hours - reports the next morning from very unhappy holidaymakers were that it took them 'til 9am to check-in the two plane-loads that had flown in that night (a Manchester flight flew in approximately an hour after us).
Breakfast the next morning was a lovely affair and our waitress was very helpful, despite the sea of grumpy faces around her. The food was of a good standard and we ventured our way out to explore the resort more fully. We walked down to the beach first of all - and that was a shock. The resort had not yet cleaned up the beach from the winter debris so it was full of glass and rubbish bought up by the seas. The beach bar was not up and the watersports were not available - neither were they for the duration of our week stay, which was the primary reason for my son and I choosing the Rodos Village Mitsis!
We soon discovered that the hotel was very much still "work in progress" with cleaners/builders etc getting the hotel prepared for the summer season . The heated pool (near the foyer) was not once heated during our stay and despite my love of swimming, nothing would induce me to enter the freezing cold water of any of the pools during our time in Kiotari.
We soon realised that Rodos Village was certainly not all it made out to be. The majority of the bar staff were surly and no matter how hard you tried, you could not get served in the evenings without waving euros under their noses (with the exclusion of one lovely blonde barmaid, who was always smiling and very helpful). They also ran out of the most popular spirits/liqueurs and stocks were not replenished during our stay.
The food was, for the most part, good. For those with fixed English tastebuds I believe they tried to accommodate but we were happy to stick with regional foods. However, my biggest gripe of the holiday was the lack of appropriate signage (or staff on hand to assist) at the hot buffet. I am allergic to fish and on one night, seven out of the nine dishes contained fish (I found this out - thankfully - due to friends made on holiday, sympathetic to my plight). With no staff available to describe what the buffet dishes contained, this could have been disastrous. However, the Italian restaurant (located at the top of the resort) only opened the night before we left and so there was no choice - eat in the main restaurant or forget it!
The entertainment - for both the children and the adults and night - was, in our opinion, very poor. The entertainments manager seemed far more concerned with his own image than our evening entertainment yet his staff did their very best to keep us cheerful, despite the inclement weather and the fact the hotel was permanently cold. One morning, a regular morning "class" was cancelled by the pool bar because (reportedly) the entertainments staff had had a late night, leaving lots of little glum faces.
As we were the first tourists of the season we were reliant on private taxis (for those of us who couldn't drive) if we wished to visit the surrounding areas, which ended up quite expensive. The Reception staff would only help you if they really had to - and to our utter amazement, we were unable to use the room 'phones to make a call to home because "they have not been set up to dial out yet". However, my partner tried to call us a few times and yet reception staff did not answer the phone.
Due to the structure of the hotel we struggled to fall asleep every evening; if you went to bed before the "entertainment" finished, you had no chance! Every single footstep echoed, all the doors seemed programmed to slam and one night, we had to go downstairs twice in the early hours of dawn because of a couple who were fighting so much above us, it sounded like furniture was being thrown in our room!
All in all, it was a relief to fly home the following Saturday evening, to warm beds and peaceful nights.
I would thoroughly recommend that you fly to Rhodes and enjoy the scenery and the beautiful Old Town. But avoid Rodos Village Mitsos at all costs, you will wish you'd saved your money!
