Rhyolite Ghost Town

... We had a bit of time though and had spotted signs on Route 374 for a ghost town called Rhyolite, so decided to go and investigate. Our guidebooks that we had mentioned it slightly but at the time of visiting we didn't really know much about it, apart from the fact that it had once been ... Read review

Ghosts & A Naked Woman

Advantages: Creepy artwork and interesting old town ruins
Disadvantages: Not much information on site

...
The ruins of Rhyolite are situated on the main eastern road into Death Valley around 4 miles west of Beatty. Although it doesn't look it when you approach, it was the 3rd largest city in Nevada in 1908 and around 8000 people lived there. When the town started to die though, people stripped houses of any useful materials that they could carry and use to rebuild elsewhere, which is why there aren't many houses left and most of the buildings ...
...was the largest building in Rhyolite in its time and lots of luxurious materials, such as Italian marble and mahogany woodwork, were used inside to give the appearance of a modern building. It also had electric lights, a telephone and inside plumbing, which was very unusual at that time. Eventually the upper floors were taken over by the First Rhyolite National Bank and the Post Office took over the basement. The Post Office was actually the last ... more

Real Life Cowboy Action

Advantages: Fun town to look around.
Disadvantages: If you are going be sure to plan your visit to incorporate High Noon

***Background*** When we were planning our travels around Arizona, we hadn't thought about the old Route 66 and had mapped out a route that by-passed it, but whilst in Kingman, which is also known as the heart of Route 66, we found a leaflet for a town along it for a historic ghost town and after our visit to Rhyolite, near Death Valley, we couldn't resist taking a detour to see what exactly was there. Following this historic road from Kingman we saw quite a few strange things including a row of mailboxes apparently in the middle of nowhere and a sign telling us if we wanted to get a mining permit in the area to 'See Don'. This was also where we saw lots of lizards running around along the small and twisty roads and also a real live young chaparral cock, AKA the road runner, which was much smaller and cuter than the cartoon ...

No Drinking The Badwater

Advantages: Beautiful and interesting scenery
Disadvantages: Very hot even in the evening.

***Background*** Having left behind the spooky area of Rhyolite Ghost Town and the strange sculptures we decided to head on down to Furnace Creek Village, where you can find accommodation, when available, and a campground. You can also grab a bite to eat at this oasis and fill up your tank. There is also a small airport too. As we had already had sorted out our accommodation and sorted out our stomachs a little earlier, all that was left at the Village for us to do was to visit the ranger station to get some more information on the attractions around this beautiful section of Death Valley. As mentioned in the Stovepipe Wells review, ranger stations are great for finding out details of hikes on some of the trails in this area and for getting good advice on surviving the intense heat in this area. The area is divided into two ...

Will A Handicapped Room Do???

Advantages: Cheap and cheerful
Disadvantages: No luxuries here

with various cans of soda and some snacks in to. Once we had taken a rest, we headed down the road again to take in sunset views of Death Valley and to explore the ghost town of Rhyolite. It was quite late when we returned and again jet lag was hitting us a little bit so we decided not to pop over to collect our free cocktails at the Casino. The motel was very quiet at night and there was no outside noise to speak of except for the rumble of the occasional truck rolling through the town. We were both exhausted by the heat but the air conditioning was excellent in the rooms despite the temperature outside being in the 80s at 9 o'clock at night. In the morning the coffee pots were sat as promised down in reception and there was a small seating area to enjoy this wake up call. ***My Thoughts*** This was a very friendly motel to stay in ...
