During a holiday to America I travelled to Richmond, Virginia and had a thoroughly enjoyable three days in this culturally and architecturally rich city.
Getting there: Road: It is about 2-2 ½ hours drive from Washington By Amtrak: Very comfortable and cheap but does not exactly provide a central dropping off point By Greyhound: Cheap way of travelling but again it drops you on the outskirts of the city By Air: Richmond airport is only really an option if you intend to pick up a car there as it is 10-12 miles outside the city
Accommodation: Virtually all the accommodation in this city is very reasonably priced as it has a university and has to cater for students for when they first arrive. One useful facility was a central reservation line that could be called to book rooms in the participating hotels in the scheme. If you do want to use this type of facility or prefer to be more independent there are plenty of Bed & Breakfast guesthouses in the historic quarters of the city.
Attractions:
A 30-day pass costing 15 dollars is widely available which will enable you to go in free to the city’s main attractions
The Virginia State Capitol The tour is very informative and when I went if you arrive in time for the last tour of the day (16:15) there is no charge however this may have changed in the meantime. A very nice example of a Neo-classical building.
The Museum of the Confederacy A marvellously laid out museum, it has many unique items such as Jeb Stuart’s hat and the medical tools that were used to amputate Stonewall Jackson’s arms at the Battle of Chancellorsville, wounds he later died of, they even have the pen that Robert E. Lee used to sign the surrender of the Confederacy at Appomattox.
The White House of the Confederacy This is next door to the Museum of the Confederacy and its tour is informative but to my mind too dull to stimulate the minds of most of its visitors.
In conclusion this is a wonderful city to visit. The cost of living i.e. eating out is extremely good value for money (again this is probably because of the University). Navigating the city is not as easy as Washington DC but this is probably because of at the end of the American Civil War a large portion of the city was burnt down and the replacement buildings were simply erected where the others fell. However this gives Richmond its wide range of architectural styles.
Advantages: Great for familly and anyone wishing to get healthy and enjoy sport Disadvantages: Too far for me to go
~~RICHMOND OLYMPIC OVAL~~
The day before we were due to fly back from Canada, we decided to do a dry run to the airport to make sure we knew the route, as it would be the first time we did the route unaccompanied. Mom came with us and she asked if we would take her to see the newly build Richmond Olympic Oval; well you don?t have to ask me twice, I love visiting buildings both new and old ones, but I do prefer the older ones. So after a few hiccups we found ourselves at the Oval.
Richmond BC appears to be the ideal setting for such a sporting facility as the town claims to have the longest life expectancy and the lowest obesity rates in all of Canada, so where else would they launch a new sport and fitness centre, which will also host the speed skating and other events in the 2010 Winter Olympics and the Paralympics games ...
Advantages: Loads! All round excellent hotel to stay in. Disadvantages: Perhaps not for kids, not in ?touristy? part of town (which could be advantages to some of course?)
This was an excellent hotel! It?s not the poshest I?ve stayed in terms of how it looks, but it has excellent facilities and is all round a great place to stay. They were chosen "Best Hotel in Richmond" as well as "Best Brunch" by Richmond News readers for 2003. I stayed there for just over a week in September 2003 while I attended a convention for the show Stargate SG-1. And I?ll be back again this summer! It?s also fairly convenient for Vancouver and the surrounding area if you?d rather not stay downtown.
Facilities include a shop with some lovely souvenirs, an Internet café, hair salon and an exercise room with saunas (and a washing machine which I only discovered after I?d lugged my bags several blocks to the local laundrette!). There is a pool and Jacuzzi in the courtyard but they are small. Reception can also fix you up ...
Advantages: Rich in history, Beautiful countryside, Georgian architecture Disadvantages: Difficult and expensive to park
"Richmond is a town unlike others, a place unique, rich in relics of the past. It is too good to be passed by." Alfred Wainwright.
Richmond is a small market town in North Yorkshire, on the edge of the Dales, and if you believe what you read in Lonely Planet guides, then it is one of the great undiscovered towns of England as far as visitors are concerned. This might be a little odd when you consider the popularity of the Dales and that the proximity of the town to the A1 (just 4 miles away) makes it easily accessible as a day trip location from a large part of the North East and Yorkshire. Indeed, I travelled down from Newcastle for the day (lured by the promise of a living history event) and it took me little more than an hour to find the town, although it unfortunately felt like it took me the same amount of time to find ...
