Starters include tandoori chicken, samosas, bhajees’s, sheek kebabs, shami kebabs amongst others.
As far as main courses go, I don’t know where to start. The offer such a huge range, we ... ...bad. The good thing about Rickshaw is that for each main course that you have, they give you papadom free. Lately, they’ve been giving us 3 although we only ever have two main courses.

If, like us, you like your curry, you will know what it’s like trying to find either a restaurant or a take away that offers food that is both reasonably priced and tastes good. Since living in Sutton Coldfield, we have tried numerous establishments, some good and some bad. Some have provided cheap food that has tasted like poo and how can I put it ‘undesirable’ effects on the digestive system, and we’ve had more pricey food that has tasted just as bad.
We have a local restaurant (that is in fact within walking distance) that provides really good tasting food that is reasonably priced and doesn’t affect your system too badly. However, after having our 2nd daughter, going out to restaurants has taken a back seat and is now a once in a while treat. Nowadays, we have a once a week treat from our local take away ‘the Rickshaw Indian take away’. We have tried others but none have compared to this.
They offer a wide range of dishes including your standard menu of starters and main courses, with all the side orders to boot. Starters include tandoori chicken, samosas, bhajees’s, sheek kebabs, shami kebabs amongst others. As far as main courses go, I don’t know where to start. The offer such a huge range, we often have difficulty deciding what to have. Examples: Tandori Specialties – chicken, chicken tikka, mixed grill, king prawn Chef recommendations – include chicken tikka masala, jalfrezi (with meat of your choice), pasanda (creamy, with nuts), tikka chilli bhuna (hot and spicy). Specialties – these dishes tend to be hotter and spicier than the norm – my hubby’s favourite is sylheti chicken chilli masala – really hot. Bangladeshi dishes – chicken, prawn or king prawn cooked with mushrooms, aubergines and egg – not tried this one yet. Baltis – chicken, lamb, whatever you want. Garlic baltis with your choice of meat, with vegetables – you name it, they’ll do it.
This is only a snippet of what they do – I could go on a lot longer but then it would get a bit boring. As with a lot of take aways, they also offer a range of sundries – rice, chips, naan bread (6 different sorts!), everything freshly cooked on the premises (you can tell by the taste, I assure you) - need I go on? Are your taste buds overflowing yet?
Its all well and good going on about how good the food is but how much will it set you back? The average price for a starter is 2.50 (sorry for lack of pound signs in this op – my keyboard is playing up), the average main course is between 4.50 and 5.00 – obviously if you start having things like king prawns, it bumps up the price a little bit. If we have a takeaway at the weekend, we usually have 2 curries, naan bread, rice, chips and we’ve never paid more than #15 even when we’ve picked the more expensive choices so it isn’t too bad. The good thing about Rickshaw is that for each main course that you have, they give you papadom free. Lately, they’ve been giving us 3 although we only ever have two main courses.
Well, that’s cost and food out of the way, what about service? Again, we can’t fault them. On any occasion that we’ve ordered a take away for delivery it’s never taken longer than an hour to get to the door. The only exception to this was the other week when England v Germany was on the telly – we waited an hour and a half then had to go and fetch it – they’d had so many orders for delivery, they were rushed off their feet – they were very apologetic though and it doesn’t happen very often. They also treat their regular customers very well. They always have a chat when I phone our order through, ask how we are etc. they’re also very helpful when it comes to picking new things and adjusting their curries to suit your taste. When I was pregnant with my 2nd child, I had a thing for garlic so I asked for extra garlic with everything – they were only too happy to oblige.
One thing we never knew until last Christmas was that if you are a regular customer (as we have obviously turned out to be!) you don’t just get the bog standard card through the door. Just after Christmas last year, we phoned our order though as normal and he asked what type of wine we liked – all their regular customers were being offered a free bottle of plonk with their order, in return for their regular custom – I thought it was a really nice gesture. A few days later, we couldn’t be bothered to cook and we were sick of turkey so we again phoned for a curry. As always, we waited a short while and our curry was duly delivered – with another free bottle of wine! I’m not sure if this was intended as an extra freebie or whether they’d go a few bottles left over but it was much appreciated!
So, if you’re in the Sutton Coldfield area visiting friends either pop in or phone through an order. They are situated on the Chester road just down from the junction of Manor Road and Bridle Lane – so long as you are within a 5 mile radius of here, delivery is free – I suppose any further than that and they start charging. Anyway – give them a try – I am sure you won’t be disappointed.
