As you would expect from any self-respecting capital, the city has many worthy sights, including the obvious ones like the Parliament Building, set impressively on a rocky promontory overlooking the Ottawa River, with panoramic views of neighbouring Hull. The park at the rear of the Parliament House is also home to a stray cat sanctuary – try to imagine one of those in Westminster and see how far you get!
Near the centre of government is the point where the RideauCanal flows through a staircase of locks down to the Ottawa River. Built by those sons-of-fun, the Royal Engineers, it bypasses the Rideau Falls. This canal is more famous for its winter usage, and I’ll come onto that later.
Getting around Ottawa is easy, despite the lack of a Metro or any sizeable railway ...

There is something to do all year-round in this clean, truly beautiful city. National Museums abound in the Nation's Capital. The National Arts Centre, smaller theaters, large festivals of all kinds attract locals and tourists alike. One can enjoy boating on the Ottawa River or on the RideauCanal. There are miles of hiking and cycling trails, even river rafting. In winter, the RideauCanal is transformed into the longest skating rink in the world. About half of its population speaks both French and English. Many excellent restaurants catering to all tastes are found in this increasingly multi-ethnic city. ...

The Canal du Midi, is a man dug canal, situated in the south of France, and joins the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean sea, via the Canal Garonne. The water sources which allow the canal to be constantly navigable, come from the Montagne Noire, (situated in the south west of the Massif Central, near Mazamet, in the Tarn area), by three lakes, and the Saint Ferréol dam. This technical challenge, first imagined in 1539, stayed a project on paper for almost a century, until 1636.
