In February this year, I went to Bulgariaskiing along with 7 of my friends. As usual, our group left it up to a couple of the girls to arrange the whole thing - imagine my surprise when they told me we were going to Bulgaria!
The main reason behind the choice of location was that it was really cheap - we paid under £400 each for half-board accomodation, ski hire, ski school for 6 hours a day and lift passes.
We stayed in a hotel called Hotel Rila, in Borovets. The hotel was pretty basic but had everything you could possibly need in the rooms. Sleeping arrangements were two single beds plus bunk-beds (guess which lucky person got the top bunk...), which was slightly irritating as it is rather difficult to climb a ladder after too much apres-ski! But we coped!!!
As it was the first time myself and a number of the group had skied, we were excited, but naturally nervous too. We needn't have worried because the ski school was absolutely fantastic. All the instructors spoke excellent English so there was no language barrier when it came to teaching us.
I think for us first-timers or even intermediates it was a fantastic place to learn or to improve our skiing. However, one of my group is practically an expert and she thought that there were not enough "black runs" for people like her.
As for the apres-ski, well, there were not that many choices for places to go. There were a few bars and only two nightclubs, and we basically had to make do with those! We all definitely had a laugh in them anyway though because...
Everything is so cheap in Bulgaria!!! Drinks-wise you can get a double vodka + mixer for 3 Lev - ONE POUND! And dinner with wine (er, quite a lot of wine actually) came to about £10 each. ALthough we were in half-board accomodation, we ate out every night as it was so cheap (and the hotel food was horrible...)
One final thing - if you do go to Bulgaria and are thinking of hiring / buying a skiing outfit in the UK - stop!!! You can buy sallopettes + ski jacket for about £50 out there (which is less than I paid to HIRE them here)!
