The Statue of Christ at Corcovado is obviously a must see, the old and rickety train is the best way of getting to the summit, sit on the right hand side of it, however, as the views are much better. A short climb from the station on foot takes you to the statue itself, where, if you can get through the crowds, you get breathtaking views of the city including the Maracana Stadium, Sugarloaf mountain, the skyscrapers in the business district and the coastline that is so familiar to the rich and famous.
Don't forget to visit the "Help" night-club where women in outfits made of not much more than dental floss will hover around you en mass hoping for some casual prostitution. Be aware that this place is very popular with European business men, so you may end up taking more home to your girlfriend that you bargained for.
The markets are excellent for souvenirs, particularly worth a look are the items made from local crystals and stones, amethyst windchimes and quartz birds are particularly good value, but be prepared to haggle.

Although it isn't mandatory, some satisfactory percentiles are established for specific services. To the restaurant waiter, 10% is already included in the bill. To hotel bellboys usually 1,00 real is given per volume / suitcase. For other individual or group services, the traveler decides the amount.

They call the city of RiodeJaneiro "Cidade Maravilhosa" (The marvellous city), I have to say that visiting Rio was an eye opening and awe inspiring experience. This review is a selection of the best parts, with a few pointers on what not to do there.
SAFETY TIPS
------------------
**Hotels
First of all, it is recommended that tourists stay in a Hotel that is on the coastal road of Copacabana beach - Avenida Atlantico, or one of the coastal roads that run adjacent to Ipanema beach. Or choose one that only a short distance from the coast. This is because if you want to go out at night, you will not have to walk down any side roads, where you are only asking for trouble. Therefore it is much safer to take a taxi. Take 'Sul' taxis. They are yellow, with a blue strip down the sides. We were tricked a few times by other taxi ...

Advantages: One of the most beautiful cities in the world Disadvantages: Not the safest city in the world
I went on a two-week holiday to Brazil a few years ago, starting in RiodeJaneiro. The main reason for the trip was to explore the Amazon, but we had to start somewhere. Rio is often marketed as the most beautiful city in the world, but has a reputation for being dangerous and crime-ridden, so I wasn't expecting too much, but it turned out to be a stunning and beautiful place.
Getting there
We flew with Iberia from London Heathrow to RiodeJaneiro via Madrid, with just a couple of hours wait in Madrid. On arrival, the official RiodeJaneiro taxis at the airport are the recommended, safest way of getting to your hotel and prepaid vouchers can be bought in the airport at the tourism desk. Alternatively there are also shuttle-busses into central Rio and to many of the hotels. We had the itinerary of flights and hotels put together ...
