Advantages: Experiencing a different culture Disadvantages: Possibly experiencing high altitude sickness
...We went to LaPaz for 3 days in September 2006. We flew from Buenos Aires and arrived at the airport in LaPaz and immediately noticed how different we felt. The air was very thin and we had to slow down. We had been warned to take it easy and providing you take the advice seriously, there is no reason why you cannot enjoy the delights of LaPaz. After checking into our hotel we had a stroll around the wonderful markets, decided where to return the following day and then headed back to the hotel for an early night. It is wise to have a long sleep, so arriving in LaPaz at night is a good start, so that you can go to bed more or less straight away. I was not too keen about eating from the market stalls even though the smells were delicious, instead we ate at our hotel which had an excellent restaurant. We did buy popcorn...

Advantages: Amazing sights, very cheap, unique city, great shopping Disadvantages: Altitude sickness, hard to get around

...groups of no more than 6 and have some good diving boats. There was one boat that I spent a day on which did not have any cover, to be honest sitting on that from 8am-3pm was too much for me and I just asked to be changed which they did.
The Sea of Cortez was used to photograph some of the BBC series the blue planet, it is therefore a great place for whale watching (from about February I think?).
Beyond the diving the food and beer is reasonably priced and tastes fine, it is mostly Mexican food so don’t expect any green vegetables! There are a couple of hotels in the area of LaPaz, on the face of it they're not five star, but they’re comfortable and have some facilities. But really you go to LaPaz for diving or deep-sea fishing and not lying by the pool all day. The town itself is fine with plenty of bars and some...

8 of us stayed at the Capital Hill Hotel+Suites in Sept 2006.
If location is what you want, then this is a winner-the hotel is as centrally located as you are going to get, plus the bus from the Train Station stops outside. A few minutes walk south... more
