Good little airport....shame about the name

Anyway I digrese, this review is about the Airport that took the place of Finningley (I still wonder to this day why on earth they couldn't they just call it Finningley Aiport?!).
Well I suppose the first plus to this ever growing airport is that it's easy to get to and for residents of the area, it's a welcome change to having to cross 'snake pass' at silly ... ...to the following countries from Robin Hood (please note that this will probably change in the winter months, however I can't be 100% certain of this and it may stay the same).

Well I suppose the first plus to this ever growing airport is that it's easy to get to and for residents of the area, it's a welcome change to having to cross 'snake pass' at silly o'clock in the morning to get to Manchester Airport to fly off to the sun!
What to expect
Ok it decsribes itself as an international airport so you would be forgiven for automatically assuming it will have the same kind of shopping and eating/drinking opportunities as say Manchester or Birmingham - it doesn't.
Beverages There are two bars at the airport: The Amy Johnson,located in the Arrivals and The Finningley Windmill, located in the Departure Lounge. You can grab at bite to eat at the Finningley Windmill. Both are owned by Wetherspoon and offer a good variety of food and drink (well the departures bar offers a reasonable food menu).
There is also the standard - Costa coffee pretty much the same as you would find at most airports.
Shopping Alpha Airport Shopping, again this is a chain which can be found at airports around the Country and offers the usual perfumes, sunglasses, spirits, cigarettes etc etc (you know the drill).
That's it for the food, beverage and shopping folks!

How to Get to Robin Hood Aiport
car For those with sat nav the full postal address is: Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, First Avenue, Doncaster, DN9 3RH Rail You can also get there by rail. Doncaster Rail Station is the closest station to Robin Hood Airport. As you would expect there is a shuttle service the runs to Robin Hood every 30 minutes.

My Opinion
Good little airport. Friendly efficient staff (well they were on my visit). Check-in and security were very quick (alwasy a bonus).
Not overly impressed with the shopping facilities, but then again it is an airport and to be honest you can read a good book until your flight is called.
I would definitely travel from here again if I was given the opportunity.
Trivia
Robin Hood as one of the longest runways in Europe (well it had to be long for some of those fighter planes to take off back in the day!).
Advantages: Ideally Located, Room For Expansion. Disadvantages: Check-In Quite Slow.

GENERAL INFORMATION
There is an official Taxi Rank situated in the Car Park, just outside the main building but most people arriving or leaving by Taxi seem to pre-book their Taxi's in advance, so I suspect that these are a bit on the expensive side.

It is worth remembering that this Airport is still quite small but it is still less than a year old and it is expanding all of the time. Already it has reached its early targets. It is however expected to be amongst the top 10 busiest Airports in the UK by the year 2015 so obviously the plans for this place are long term. Currently ...

Advantages: Fantastic building, excellent car parks, long, long runway with massive potential Disadvantages: Road signs from motorways are still not in place - some dispute
The new Robin Hood airport has an impressive terminal building and excellent carparking faciliites. A viewing gallery should be completed in July and there are ample opportunities for people to watch the aircraft take off and land if interested - it came as a surprise to me that lots of people are!! I'm not the only saddo around by a long way.
Inside the terminal, before check-in, there is a Costa Coffee and a Spar. Drinks at the Costa are very ... ...to see what the place is like, car parking is something like 50p for 15 minutes, £1.50 for up to half an hour and £2.50 for up to an hour - ish! I can't remember the exact times. You pay at a machine in the terminal building.
Though it looks complete, the building is still being developed. I am told a cash machine is planned and this will be a welcome addition.

Sheffield has its own Airport but this is very small and has been a bit of a commercial flop. At the moment the only scheduled flights are between here and London City Docklands and even then there are only a handful of flights each week.
The nearest International Airport is the new Sheffield-Nottingham RobinHoodAirport which is located near Doncaster and about half an hours travelling distance from Sheffield centre by car.
