Well I for one was upset to see the closure of RAF Finningley back in the early 1996. It was an end of an era.
Not only was RAF Finningley known world wide because of the annual Battle of Britain Air Display (which was the largest one-day airshow event in the country), it was also a community and this died when the airfield was sold to Peel Holdings (the owners of Robin Hood Airport) back in 1996.
Anyway I digrese, this review is about the Airport that took the place of Finningley (I still wonder to this day why on earth they couldn't they just call it Finningley Aiport?!).
Well I suppose the first plus to this ever growing airport is that it's easy to get to and for residents of the area, it's a welcome change to having to cross 'snake pass' at silly o'clock in the morning to get to Manchester Airport to fly off to the sun!
What to expect
Ok it decsribes itself as an international airport so you would be forgiven for automatically assuming it will have the same kind of shopping and eating/drinking opportunities as say Manchester or Birmingham - it doesn't.
Beverages There are two bars at the airport: The Amy Johnson, located in the Arrivals and The Finningley Windmill, located in the Departure Lounge. You can grab at bite to eat at the Finningley Windmill. Both are owned by Wetherspoon and offer a good variety of food and drink (well the departures bar offers a reasonable food menu).
There is also the standard - Costa coffee pretty much the same as you would find at most airports.
Shopping Alpha Airport Shopping, again this is a chain which can be found at airports around the Country and offers the usual perfumes, sunglasses, spirits, cigarettes etc etc (you know the drill).
That's it for the food, beverage and shopping folks!
Destinations You can fly to the following countries from Robin Hood (please note that this will probably change in the winter months, however I can't be 100% certain of this and it may stay the same).
Austria Bulgaria Cyprus Egypt Greece Ireland N.Ireland Poland Spain Tunisia Turkey Jersey
Airlines Airlines that currently operate from Robin Hood are:
Flybe First Choice Thomson Ryanair Wizz Air
Car Parking Longstay and short stay car parking opn site and premium car parking is also available.
car For those with sat nav the full postal address is: Robin Hood Airport DoncasterSheffield, First Avenue, Doncaster, DN9 3RH
Rail You can also get there by rail. Doncaster Rail Station is the closest station to Robin Hood Airport. As you would expect there is a shuttle service the runs to Robin Hood every 30 minutes.
Bus Check out the bus time table which can be found by accessing the following link: www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/timetables

My Opinion
Good little airport. Friendly efficient staff (well they were on my visit). Check-in and security were very quick (alwasy a bonus).
Not overly impressed with the shopping facilities, but then again it is an airport and to be honest you can read a good book until your flight is called.
I would definitely travel from here again if I was given the opportunity.
Trivia
Robin Hood as one of the longest runways in Europe (well it had to be long for some of those fighter planes to take off back in the day!).

I've never thought about flying from here, we can never seem to fly from East Mids and always end up flying from Manchester driving via the wonderful Cat and Fiddle in the early hours of the morning, I will certainly check this out for our next holiday. Anna
