Paying tribute to the legendary rock band that gave new meaning to the term 'Rock Superstar', 'Detroit Rock City' is a hilarious coming-of-age comedy about four teenagers who embark on a wild pilgrimage to attend a KISS concert in Detroit. much-delayed breakthrough album Rock City (Version 2.0), "I get lip from clicks I could rap circles around". And therein lies both Royce's greatest strength and biggest problem. An assured, talented, dextrous rapper, he hasn't quite carved out his own niche. "Boom" itself is a case in point. One of the better tracks the brilliant DJ Premier has produced in the past few years, it quickly became a staple in hip-hop clubs. But when it was first released, while Primo's style remained unmistakable, nobody could at first figure out who the rapper was. Royce's voice--like a gruffer Common or more mellifluous Jeru--isn't as distinctive as either. But there is plenty of material here that proves Royce can cut it. "Mr Baller" unites him with Clipse, and Premier's other track, "My Friend", is very nearly "Boom"'s equal. The title track sees his Detroit homeboy Eminem join in, and "Life", dedicated to his son, even interpolates the Bee Gees' "Woman In Love" to impressive effect. Rock City gets better the more you play it, and has the feel of an underground classic. --Angus Batey

The interior of Rock City is nothing to be passionate about, when the lights go up, and you surely don’t want to be around when they do – the true colours of Rock City (or lack of them) are revealed in their utmost repulsiveness. This is not a place to go for the décor neither is it the place to visit in your best bib and tucker. The floor is quite possibly the worst aspect of Rock City, if you venture there for a gig during the week, you will find yourself literally rooted to the spot – not least from the sights and sounds you will encounter, but because the floor hasn’t been cleaned since the previous Friday – sticky in the extreme.
There are three large bars situated in Rock City, one upstairs in the gallery, a very small and cramped area which features seats and tables for the few lucky or unlucky enough to be there early! It is a perilous journey up to the gallery – especially if you have had one over the eight, and it is a busy night (always), as you will find many people in various stages of inebriation and exhaustion taking 5 on the steps.
The other two bars are situated in the main arena of Rock City, the bars are always well stocked – and prices are in line with other inner city watering holes. There are discount nights – as Nottingham is a University City, there is the requisite student night. The bar staff are pretty friendly, although rarely have time to stop and chat – it is fast and furious work at all times. I have always found the prices to be consistent, I have heard many a tale, and experienced the same where each time you visit the bar, the total is different for the same drinks – always higher!
The toilet areas are quite frankly best to be avoided at all costs, ladies if you do require a bathroom stop – use the men’s! Although you have to be pretty quick as the bouncers have cottoned on to this fact, and take exception to it!
Entering Rock City has always filled me with a sense of dreaded excitement for here I have seen some spectacular sights, nothing on the scale of the seven wonders of the world – but a myriad of sound, light, vision and smell. Nothing unpleasant - you understand me, but your senses are assaulted from every angle.
So far I have pointed out only disadvantages, what you may be asking is just what is the attraction, to this apparent hellhole? Well I will tell you…
The atmosphere – sadly I don’t have the literary skills to explain such an elusive sensation. Rock City is a very small venue in the club/gig venue stakes – holding a mere 2000 people. When those 2000 people are so enclosed it makes for some interesting collisions and experiences. The best nights to attend Rock City are gig nights; they have some excellent well known, as well as local and unsigned bands. The ticket prices are usually around the £10 mark – a bargain for some of the top bands I have seen. Gigs in recent time I have attended include Big Country The Saw Doctors The levellers The Alarm 2000 Catatonia Stiff little Fingers The Mission Gig nights are usually weeknights, with rock/alternative/indie nights at the weekends. Typical admission prices are between £3 – £5. The management does hold the right to refuse admission, this only happens when Rock City is full. I have never seen anyone turned away due to his or her state of dress, indeed the dress code – if it exists is very casual.
The type of people you will find in Rock city vary so much depending on the type of night you go for, I have seen people as old as 82 and as young as 14 in Rock City. You will find people from all walks of life here, from the well heeled businessman – complete with laptop and mobile phone (a pointless accessory in Rock City) and plucked, primped and pampered ‘secretary’, to the down at heel students on their never ending quest for cheap alcohol. Whatever your status in life, you are sure to fit in, I have made many friends and acquaintances over the years, not hard to do when you are one in 2000 people, squashed into an apparent seething mass all singing the same song.

Rock city has three different rooms, each playing a different type of music. The main one is known as the Main Room (aren’t we rockers original). This is the largest, has a stage to dance on, two bars, one food bar, a large dance floor, and an upstairs balcony with another bar and seating (as well as a good view of the dance floor). The other two rooms are a lot smaller. Room 2 (again our originality comes to the fore) ... ...closed to separate it from Rock City). It has one large bar, a quite large dance floor, and several seating areas. If you are going to an event at this club check first whether it is being held in The Rig or Rock City, and if you are trying to enter Rock City and want to use The Rig entrance because there is a smaller queue check first that it is being used as an entrance for the event you are going to, otherwise you could be planning to go to the ...

Nope, 'tis Nottingham Rock City, lauded amongst rock fans, almost whispered of in revered tones by those who haven't been there, almost mystical in its existence. Nottingham Rock City fast become the Mecca of rock fans everywhere, if you hadn't been there, you just hadn't lived, it had to be the one place to go.
So I did! Saturday as a matter of a fact, yes I must admit that it was one of the deciding factors in choosing where to go ... ...in Birmingham. Coming up at Rock City in the next couple of months are the likes of Ash, NOFX, Bad Religion and more. The ticket prices average around the £15 mark, so its not too bad. Capacity is quite small though so you have to get your tickets early, I believe it fits in around 2000 people.
I of course went for that dancing and the drinking! As we were there over the weekend we decided to go on the Saturday BUT if we had been there the whole ...

...night out at the famous Rock City.
We had heard allsorts of rumours about the place, one was from some feedback from a Ciao member saying you stick to the floor.
Well I can verify that, yes you really do.
Anyway, Rock City is in the heart of Nottingham City Centre, and we were preparing ourselves for a long queue. Apparently we had gone at the right time, so the taxi driver said, as loads of students were away on holiday and normally it was heaving.
... ...younger people in there, the Rock Room was where the golden oldies were, mostly people over 30.
We stayed in there for a while , then started to feel old, we went to find the last room, before we stuck to the floor. One bit of advice, is never stand still for long, the chewing gum or fallen beer, sticks like mad to your shoes.
The last room was down the stairs and to the right of the entrance, this was a pokey little room compared to the others.

Advantages: 3 rooms to choose from each playing different styles of rock music. Bands playing live as well. Disadvantages: Can get VERY busy, beer some nights is a little pricey
Rock city is touted as being the best rock club in the north by many popular rock magazines, so me and some friends travelled down from Sheffield to check out this venue.
At first it was a little difficult to locate. Rock city is tucked away in a back street. Thankfully when we went into the scream pub round the corner, all we had to do was follow the horde of goths and skaters off to the venue.
After queing for about 15 mins we eventually got ... ...downstairs, which plays old school rock and metal. Opposite to this is a very small room which plays a mix of Drum and bass, Skate punk and Nu metal, and music that crosses between D'n'B and metal such as pitchshifter.
From here you can then head upstairs. This is where you will find 3 bars, a fairly big dance floor and stage where obviously the bands play who come to rock city. Finally above this is the balcony bar.
I'd guess the club is of medium ...

Well Rock City - What can be said about the place.
It is reasonalby cheap to get in, which is maybe why it gets such a huge queue outside if you don't get there early.
The place itself is grubby, and it looks as if the last time it was cleaned or redecorated was in 1975 - which is long before a lot of the people in there were born! The loos, and I can only speak for the ladies, are not the most clean places in the world, with the usual sink blockages, ... ...biggest room was playing recent songs, and was full of underdressed females trying to get off with blokes with funny haircuts! A bit too much of a meat market for my liking.
I prefer the 60's/70's room, where the music was better, and the folks were slightly older. However the room is very small, and it can be hard to get to the bar. And the drinks are expensive.
The floors can be sticky! But take care, they can also be extremely slippy, especially ...

Advantages: Vibrant Nightlife, Music Scene Disadvantages: Lack of Green Space
music (Athlete played this year), and various other spectacles.
Nottingham has a vibrant nightlife, countless bars and a great deal of clubs. The more up-market and trendy bars are in the 'lacemarket' area of the city. Having two large Universities - Nottingham Trent and Nottingham Uni, there are a great deal of students out on week day nights.
The music scene in the city is good and growing. Nottingham has some excellent venues in Nottingham Arena (also an iceskating rink), RockCity, The Bodega Social Club, Stealth and Rescue Rooms.
It could be argued that the city lacks green space, however its fairly small and the countryside (places like Sherwood Forest!) is never too far away. Wollaton Park and Wollaton Hall near the Uni is a fairly large park which hosts an annual music festival.

Night time in Nottingham is as cultured or as wild as you want it to be. There are over 120 pubs and some fantastic night clubs. There is the famous Palais. This club has been here since the dance hall days but don't worry that it might be a bit long in the tooth, The Palais has a state of the art music and laser lighting system and is definitely the place to be.

nottingham is famous for it's alternative scene. Nottingham's Rock-City club has been voted the best rock club in britain for about 10 years running. and before you go on to RC, theres plenty of places to go to get in the mood. first, there's the tap'n'tumbler near the theatre royal, only five minutes from RC. a friendly place with a constant stream of heavy metal and cheap drinks. there's also the old angel, which is your best place to go to see live performances from local bands before moving on to RC. lastly, there is the new Pit & Pendulum near the council house. this is a them pub obcessed with horror where the staff join in on the fun, and sell cheap drinks and seven deadly sins cocktails, it's the perfect place to loosen up. ...
