I have visited the Costa del Sol for many years now and a trip to Gibraltar is a must. Gibraltar is 40 mins drive from Marbella and definatley worth a visit. With an area of only 6.5 sq km and a population of only 27,649 it is suprising how much the people of gibraltar have managed to build on this area. The spoken language is both english and spanish or Gibaltarian to be poltically correct.
When you first see the Rock of Gibraltar, from either the Costa del Sol or above the surrounding countryside, causes you to think the place is so small. It has had this effect on people for many thousands of years. Gibraltar is a beacon which signals the position of the Strait of Gibraltar, the narrow neck which separates Europe from Africa and provides the only link between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
When you first enter gibraltar many coach trips park in the bordering town of Spain La linea as queues in and out can often be long. There are two passport controls one english and one spanish so make sure you do not leave your passport at home.
Once past customs there is an area where a selection of busses take you to various areas around the rock. The bus ia a set fare of either 40p or 100 PTS as both english and spanish currency are accepeted. Also as you enter there are lots of taxi drvers offering rock Tours these are expensive roughly 20 pound but they do give you the full guided tours of the rock entrance to the caves on the rock and to see the famous monkeys on the rock. However you can get the bus to the bottom of the rock and catch cable car to the top and then buy entrance to caves and monkeys and this is cheaper and you can do the trip in your own time.
Once you have visited the rock the next thing and only thing to do is visit the MAIN street. The strange thing about gibraltar is although the temp is the same as spain the place is the image of the UK. When you enter a shop the prices are displayed in English.
A packet of 200 cigarettes will cost you 7 pound 50 and a bottle of top name spirit 4 pound 50 a litre. There are lots of linen and material shops which are also cheap but restaurants are much the same as english. There are also you typical high street stores including Marks and spemcer. safeway,Dorothy Perkins, Top shop Bhs.
Bars are typically english although recently A square called CASEMATES has been built and this looks a little more like spain with its terrace bars and is nice to sit in during the summer.
On thursday nights in Casemates square there are live bands and Late night shopping.
Gibralatar does not have the pretty areas that spain has to offer but if you are looking for cheap ciggarettes and alcohol and a glimpse of the monkeys then definatley go to Gibraltar. The allowances for duty free are the same as entering any european country.
Gibraltar is not somewhere for a 2week holiday in my opinion there is a seriuos lack of nightlife and things to do once you have done the things metioned above but it is definatley a MUST SEE if you are in the cost del sol area of Spain thee is no excuse. A trip from these parts should cost no more than 3000 pesetas.

Sorry for low rating but Gibraltar is not in Spain, which is misleading. Also surprised you said it doesn't have views. That's about all it's got!

Once place I have always been interested in going - was put off by reports of long checks when trying to get back into Spain - it will be interesting to see what happens to this Island in the next few years based on recent talks between Britain and Spain.
