Rodrigues is a very small island not far from Mauritius.It in fact belongs to the Republic of Mauritius. Rodrigues is so small that the whole island can be visited in a day.Also, the people there are very kind and friendly, always smiling and warm.There are two 5 star hotels there, namely the Cotton Bay and the Mourouk Ebony which is situated on a kind of small mountain and offers a very beautiful scenery of the blue sea.The hotels offer major entertainment like water sports, night shows and the typical creole foods without forgetting the crabs, lobsters,shrimps etc...They also offer tours of the island shows of the Sega dance which is their own folkloric music, once you get in it, you won't stop moving.
Rodrigues is not a very developed island and in fact it looks like Mauritius island was a very long time ago. Once there, it is advised to explore the lives of the people living there.They do have a very modest life,This lifts us from the materialistic world we are living. In the early morning for example, when taking a walk, fishermen can be seen in the shallow sea, trying to catch fish and octopus to sell or for their own food. This is an amazing scene and they can be stared at for hours.
The postmen there delivers letters by foot. Also, some people have to climb mountains to go to their places. Most of them rear poulty and cattle, almost like living on a small farm. There are very few rich people there but although it is a poor country, it does not hide its beauty, beauty of its culture. In the evenings, people, mostly men can be seen playing dominoes or just having a chat sitting under the shops or by the ebach and drinking their traditional RUM.
Apart from hotels, there are several guest houses where a better perception of the lives of the inhabitants can be obtained. The guest houses are usually lovely places with palm trees or filaos trees, and besides they prepare typical foods for their customers. Also, some people rent their houses to tourists.
The places of interests are the most amazing ones and the beatiful sun just adds to the beauty. Marvellous and breathtaking places can be discovered,they are very quiet and beautiful places with views of the sea, the mountains and the landscape. Some examples are Baladirou, Grand Baie, Anse aux Anglais, Caverne patate( which is a cave to visit),and the place where they manufacture lime. Mountains can be climbed easily, and often upon climbing you will come across a small house with some cattle or hens around where a small family lives.
The Ile aux Cocos is a small island which tourists often visit by a small boat. Often the guide tour organises a small barbecue which is done on the sea.
Visiting Rodrigues can be a real pleasant experience, It is very relaxing and can be said to be heaven on Earth. It is an ideal holiday and a definite break after so many months' of work , stress and boredom from living the same life in the same ennvironment.
