See what a 1000 people built

Advantages: beautiful, unique
Disadvantages: not allways opened

The Palace of Parliament is the most beautiful building that was built by a comunist president. It is the second building after Pentagon. Situated in the middle of Bucharest is the perfect place to have a global view of the capital of Romania. Nowadays the building is the place where romanian politicians works and where the laws are debate by the Senat. It has a wonderful architecture with a lot of rooms and great halls. Inside you can see a lot ...
...This building is opened for turistic visits and once a year all the people can enter and visit the rooms where politicians work. It's a place that really deserves to be visited! So do not wait to much for it! You will have the great experience to meet one of the most beautiful things that the comunist era created. ...

The so-called Dracula castle!

Advantages: Nice collection of artefacts, wonderful building
Disadvantages: Crowds, nothing to do with Dracula

Bran Castle is an overpowering structure which lies on top of a hill overlooking the small village of Bran which is closely located to Brasov. Bran is famous as being "Dracula's Castle", although there is no proof that Vlad Tepes actually ever set foot in the building, although it is thought that he may have hung out there for a few days during warfare. There is even less evidence that Bram Stoker knew anything about it. This is however a cracking ...
...adds to the feeling. What doesn't really add to the feeling is the large amount of stalls selling Dracula and Romania memorobillia nor the hoardes of tourists waddling along in a line. Like so many "special" places, the people visiting it often take away any feeling of authenticity the landmarks have and I'd be a hypocrite to say I didn't - as I was also a visitor! The building was originally built in the 13th century but was destroyed by the Mongols, ...

Teatrul National "Lucian Blaga"

Advantages: Beautiful, neobaroque building, lots of representations, greatest actors playing
Disadvantages: The interior should be redecorated

The monumental National Theatre and Opera House is the student`s favourite place. In the neo-baroque environment classical and modern plays, opera and ballet shows come alive. As a traveler to Transylvania everybody should visit it! You`ll be astonished by it`s interior red design as well. And if you are lucky, you`ll meet there one of Transylvania`s greatest Romanian actor who is Florin Piersic! -Building data and history- Built between 1904 ...
...with Ferenc Herczeg's play -Bujdosók and until 1919 was the location of the local Hungarian National Theatre . Since 1919, the building has become home to the Romanian National Theatre and Romanian Opera. Number of seats: 1200 Style: neo-baroque with secessionist inflections ( the foyer) ...

"How not to decorate" Romanian style

Advantages: Attractive and interesting attraction, good value for money, don't have to pay to see grounds
Disadvantages: Decor quite tasteless in parts

...The castles of Peles and Pelisor are right next to each other, for reasons I'll explain later, but it's a visit to the bigger, grander Peles Castle I'm reviewing here. The castle was originally built as a summer residence for King Carol I who was actually German; the guide who took us round the castle explained a little of how it came about that this German became king of Romania, a rather complicated history which is too intricate to explain here, ...
...Something that is great about Peles is that you need not pay an admission fee unless you actually want to see the interior but you can go into the grounds and get a good look at the exterior of the castle and the murals in the courtyard as well as the superb Romanelli sculptures in the gardens. The somewhat smaller and more tasteful Pelisor Castle stands in the same grounds and as you come in through the gate (look out for the bedraggled looking ...

Hanul Lui Manuc - a hyped up hotel

Advantages: Relatively cheap for capital city, looks nice from outside, interesting history
Disadvantages: Poor service, grubby rooms, needs updating

When you are traveling for a longer period of time without any concrete plans, arriving in a capital city without any pre-booked accommodation can be a daunting prospect. A few days before we were due to travel to Bucharest we met Unrest (actually Ernest, a charming Swiss) traveling in the opposite direction to us who recommended we try Hanul Lui Manuc. We recognized the name having seen it as particularly recommended in our Lonely Planet and we ...
...this function appeared not to be available. When we arrived in Bucharest we headed straight for Hanul Lui Manuc and found it quite easily, tucked away behind Piata Unirii, not far from the Palace of Parliament. It is less than a minute from a Metro station and close to a shopping plaza. We were instantly charmed; the timbered building forms a quadrant with a wide archway as the entrance. It is instantly recognizable as a former coaching inn. Inside ...
