Are we there yet? Advantages: A free seat in the midst of all that is hectic! Disadvantages: Not like the pictures I loved these steps in all the photos i'd ever seen. i couldn't wait to get there. In the end my husband, two kids and I arrived at them from the top and had hurried down them (through the hoards of people) before we realised where we were. It was July and there were no flowers. Neither was there any sign of there ever being any. I would be very interested to hear if anyone has actually seen flowers, apart from in pictures. Having said all that, ... ...enjoyed people watching from a free seat, for quite a while. It was lovely. A real hive of activity. I could have sat longer if there hadn't been so many shops calling me. It is also the best place to get your bearings. You can see lots of streets meeting and so many shops and cafes to chose from. Haven of peace in Rome Advantages: Very peaceful, friendly staff Disadvantages: 20 minute bus ride from centre I stayed in this hotel with my partner as part of a package deal bought on Last Minute. You have to take a bus to get there, it is about 20 minutes from the Termini station (bus 90) and another 10 to get to Plaza Venezia (bus 60). We didn't find this difficult as we live in London and are used to travelling. I also found central Rome very hectic and noisy and so liked returning to a quieter suburb. Plus you get to see the 'real' Rome, where people ... ...have to get off at the Sempione stop, cross the square and go up the hill, taking the first left on the corner with Blockbuster. It is a nice area, with shops, cafes and pizzerias, all much cheaper than central Rome. The buses run all night. The hotel itself is gorgeous. It is four star, in a converted villa. It has very modern decoration, with modern art and black and white photos of Rome decorating white walls. View of St Peter's from your bedroom! Advantages: Location, staff, room size, breakfast Disadvantages: none I stayed in the Hotel Michelangelo while on a work trip to Rome in December 2007 and i can't fault the hotel. We were holding a conference in their meeting rooms and they were nothing short of amazing in terms of helping us plan the event. As a place to stay, the hotel was perfect. The bedrooms were really large. I had a twin room to myself and it was massive. i'm not sure how much we paid for the rooms, but as a charity, i know it wouldn't have ... ...value for money and helped make our conference such a success. The breakfasts were brilliant and plentiful and the buffet lunch we had was great. The hotel is in the perfect spot for sightseeing in Rome. We arrived late at night, but headed straight out to explore the city - easy to do with such a perfect location right next to St Peter's - i could see the dome from my bedroom!! Want to Roam around Rome? - Stay Here! Advantages: Location, Price and Staff Disadvantages: Nothing, It is what it is! ...Location ********* The Clarin Hotel is a 2 star hotel situated in Via Palermo, a street central to the city centre although on the Eastern side, and approximately a 5 minute walk from Termini Station and a 10-12 minute walk to the Coliseum and many other attractions. I would recommend getting the train from the airport (either of them) to Termini Station as the hotel is 2 roads away from the station, and as long as your case has wheels or bag isn't ... ...I ended up booking the Clarin Hotel via the intermediary Lastminute.com and I don't know how much they charge in commission but I still found it reasonably priced. I have been on city breaks before where we have skimped on spending loads on a hotel in the centre and ended up suffering and having to wait for buses/trams/taxi's to take us in and out. Which ends up costing a bomb. So I decided this trip we would pay the money and stay in the centre ... Sharing my experience of the Sheraton Roma Advantages: Comfortable hotel - handy for the metro Disadvantages: Characterless - can be expensive ...booking the Sheraton. The Sheraton isn't in central Rome, it's in the EUR district. This presented no significant problem however. It's a breeze to find - take junction 26 on the ring road and head for central Rome. Go through the EUR district almost to the very end and turn left at the sign that says 'Sheraton Hotel' (you can see it from the road anyway). It's a big, modern(ish) hotel with absolutely no redeeming features architecturally but all ... ...what you'd expect in a Sheraton - glitzy and shiny with lots of leather sofas dotted around for those little tete-a-tetes, a large area to go online (or as they say ' the Link@Sheraton experienced with Microsoft'), and a large piano bar just off to the side. There's also a small shopping mall with four or five outlets offering gifts, jewellery and tobacco etc. Having sorted that all out, I went to park the car.
