Before the Trip

I had decided to pick a romantic weekend away for my boyfriend and I for Valentines 2009 weekend, and had booked back in August 2008 with First Choice a trip for four days to Rome. I had selected a four star hotel bed and breakfast, the StarHotel, Metropole, Rome, and return flights with easyjet, travel insurance and return private taxi from the hotel to the airport all for about £600.00 for two people.

To aid my trip I had purchased a travel guide with maps and advice this range in price, mine cost £8.99 and this guide was throughly useful, in what to look out for, where the best places were and what to avoid!!!

The Weather

Over the four days we were in Rome, it was pure sunshine with no clouds at all. We had no rain and its was reasonably warm, though in need of a light jacket. However rain was predicted the week we left, so i would recommend an umbrella, coat and good walking shoes for this time of year.

The Flight and Arriving in Rome

Our flight from Gatwick with easyjet lasted less than two hours and was very clean and pleasent overall. We encountered no real problems, we had to wait a little while for our bags at the other end, and on exiting the airport struggled to find our driver to take us to our hotel (it was packed with male drivers, holding signs up with people's names on). However once we had found him, we had a fifteen minute drive to our hotel and it was exciting to go through the city looking at all the ancient ruins surrounding the modern roads and buildings.

The Hotel: StarHotel, Metropole, Rome

I was so glad that I decided to upgrade my hotel for a 4* and selected its a good position in the centre of Rome, and because we booked so early we also got a room upgrade to a superior suite. The hotel from the outside looked a bit grubby on arrival, but the entrance was very modern and clean. There were three lifts, internet access, the restaurant, a gym and a luggage hold. The bar also extended beyond the entrance area and was very expensive, one small drink was 15.00euros, we opted for a 'tall' cocktail thinking we would get a bit more, it came in a martini glass...so watch out for their wording and descriptions.

The hotel staff at the reception desk were polite and friendly, and we checked in without any problems, they took copies of our passports (to stop us from leaving the country if we didnt pay our mini bar bill i guess!) and provided us maps of the local area. They all spoke excellent English.

They were also keenly advertising the "tour bus" that picked you up from differnet points in Rome and took you to the different major exibits Rome had to offer. However I highly recommend NOT to buy this additional extra at 20.00euros a day per person, as everything is in walking distance. I would only recommend this to people who do not enjoy walking, which if you are going to Rome, you will really miss out because the back streets are just as diverse and culuturally rich as the main tourisity ones! I think they must get some form of commision for each one they sell, as they advertised it several times during our stay.

Our room was cleaned and our bed remade everyday, even when we did not put out a 'please makeup the room' sign out, everything was replenished such as towels and most importantly the champagne in the mini bar.

The only disadvantage (from my fellas perspective) was that there the air conditioning was not functioning in our room. The receptionist however found it amusing (and so did i) when he asked why that the air con did not work in our room, she looked at him rather puzzled and said "Air conditioning is not turned on in the winter, Sir."

The other interesting thing during our stay here, was that the hotel did not provide double beds, rather two singles. So like a couple of teenagers putting the beds together for a 'romantic' weekend, was quiet humorous! The room was very clean
on entry, with lots of facilites, even a tv in the bathroom!

We had breakfast each morning, and it was very popular with the other visitors. We had a personal service by a waiter, with tea and coffee served to us at our table. There was options of a cooked breakfast, cerals, juices, fruit, yougurts, cakes and bread with ham and cheeses and it was all unlimited. So we made sure we ate as much as we could to get our money's worth and also avoid eating alot later at lunch as the prices were quiet expensive eating out! The quality was very good, and was always being replenished whilst we were there. Their evening menu did not change, expect on Valentine's night where a special menu was arranged.

Having a walk about the streets:

Once we had settled in, unpacked and refreshed we went in search of food.

Outside our hotel was a few food resturants, however we found that pricing was quiet expensive! The first little place we investigated, instantly knew we was English, before we said a single word, they tried to get us to buy the "Tourist Menu" which was £35.00 for a meal per person, however we just opted for a plain pizza and diet coke each. This came to £28.00 for both of us, which for two pizzas and two cokes was expensive by UK costs, but we knew that where we were and decided to embrace it. The food was great and the atomsphere was very quiet and full of locals, so we obviously had picked a good place to eat!

We then went for a walk in our surrounding areas, finding street sellers on every corner, the train station being next door practically to the hotel and lots of shops, mainly tourist shops filled with a variety of gifts and unique items, again pricing was varied and generally expensive, however we found the back streets cheaper than the main tourist sites.

We then found a little coffee, ice cream and cake parlour, there was no prices on the food or drinks and we should have checked before hand, we settled down had two coffees and two cakes. The cakes were very dry and had very little filling, the coffees however were very good. However the bill came to 32euros. My boyfriend nearly flew at the guy behind the till.

After breakfast the next day we ventured out to the nearest exhibit, a ten minute walk to the famous Roman Collosium!

The Collosium

I knew that on arrival at the Collosium there would be a long wait in queuing to get in, and because it was Valentine Saturday, i had no doubt that many tourist couples would be heading to this 'top ten' destination in Rome. On arriving in the vicinity of the place, we were bombarded with "Do you speak English, Sir? English tour for the Collosium!" It seems that English is the main language that people from different countries which are not English speaking, speak here.

We decided to take a chance and joined onto a very large group, the price to get into the collosuim was 14.00 euros and our tour added on an additional 10.00 euros, this came with another tour of the Palantine Hill and Forum after lunchtime for free. However because it was Valentine's weekend, yours trully got in for free for the whole time. :)

As we had joined the group, this meant we did not have to buy the tickets, and did not have to join the ticket queue. We did however have to join the 'airport style metal detector queue', (fortunately they let you keep your shoes on!) which was not too long, but we did stand in it for about ten mintues. There were hundreds and hundreds of people there on this day, and although the collosium itself was impressively huge, with only one exit and one entrance it was obviously very congested, and at times we could not even hear our tour guide (even though she had a microphone speaker) and was shoved around alot. (Keep an eye out for pickpockets, one guy on our tour had his wallet pinched).

Our tour guide spoke very good and clear English however and she also was incrediblely knowledgeable about Rome and the Collosium and crammed tons and tons of facts in, not only about the history and use of the Collosium, but what happened in the surrounding area around it. We managed to get a few good snaps (see pics at the end) with the Collosium in the background and at the end of the tour we were given time to walk around, go up to the upper levels (there was a gallery of art), either by stairs or by the lift. (We took the stairs - the Roman's must have been very fit people!) There is also a small shop, but this mainly had books and DVDs, and again was so small with one exit that people could not move in and out without complaining.

A quick bite to eat, and a large bite in the pocket......

After exploring the collosuim for several hours on our tour, it was a pleasent suprise on the exit to find a food 'caravan' selling pizzas and drinks. However on purchasing one bottle of coke, one half sandwich pizza (with very little filling i might add) and one chocolate bar of snickers, it came to the grand total of 16euros, practically £16.00. I could not...could not believe it! Thankfully my boyfriend picked up the tab on this one!

We waited

Rome (Italy), The Collosuim Val Day 2009
for our next tour guide to join us (a student tour guide, so this tour was free) outside the collosuim exit in the sun (we looked quiet cool in our sunglasses), however lots and lots of sellers kept coming up to us and trying to sell sunglasses, scarfs and toys. After a while it got annoying and i strongly recommend hanging onto your purses ladies as i had one trying to grab my bag to attain my attention in attempting to sell his fake copy one to me.

The Palantine Hill and Forum

The palantine hill and roman forum are also worth a visit, not only for a pleasant walk, but also for some great photos of ancient Rome. This was further confimed when a couple were having their wedding day photos shot there. We had an hour tour with our guide and was given jam packed information about its history including the many individuals whom lived and ruled here. This is also a great place to see the rest of Rome as it is high above it. There are no toilets or drinking facilities inside the forum, and with one exit at the other side of the forum (at least a fiveteen minute walk away) i recommend ensuring you have water on you and go to the toilet before hand.

Getting Lost in Rome

After another expensive lunch of pasta and lattes, I ordered by fella to take me to the Trevi Fountain (the last time i visited Rome, the Trevi Fountain was not working). Getting from the Collosium to the trevi fountation is a bit more tricky and required a bit more map reading that previously thought, but still is within a reasonable walking distance. We initally got lost down some of the back streets and as the sun was setting was getting worried we wouldnt find our way back to the hotel. However down the backstreets away from the main crowd were a variety of fountains, shops and small historic places of worship, not to mention more ruins among the modern buildings.

We then retraced our steps and found the correct road, which was a bit hard to miss in the first place as it was the main high street filled with shops, resturants and coffee shops, including several markets. The streets were filled with dancers, artists and stunt artists, and there were plenty of chances to buy souvieners from the many stalls and shops.

A snack in.....MacDonalds

Yes in the middle of all the ancient splender, of the classy desginer shops and wonderful smells of home Italian cooking, is a MacDonalds. However do not be fooled. This a very expensive MacDonalds, two meduim Big Mac meals came to nearly £20.00 (no i didnt forget to write euros, it was nearly £20.00!!) Although the menu was in English, nobody spoke English and the service was incredibly slow, we waited in the queue for 20minutes to be served. The food was an ok standard, but i guess it was better than a 50.00euro bill!

The Trevi Fountain and Homemade Italian Ice Cream

The sun was starting to set on Rome as we arrived at the Trevi Fountain, the lights in the water were turned on and we took lots and lots of photos because of its huge size and splender.

However getting to take these photos is a task in itself, we had people continually asking us "can we take your photo?" I would like to point out, this is not a free service, although we knew this and although they could see we were taking pictures of ourselves quiet easily, it wasnt good enough for them, and we were asked every few seconds, which unfortunately started to wear off the novelty of being there.

Furthermore the area the fountain is in is tiny and has a vast number of side roads which lead into it, which then has a range of tourists pouring in and of course all wanting to take their photos! Again remember to watch your purses and wallets.

Although at night and sunset it was spectacular, i think maybe an early morning visit would get you a better shot and a bit more space.

Valentines Dinner - The StarHotel

We then walked back to our hotel (my feet were killing by this point!) and got dressed up for our evening valentines meal in the downstairs 4* resturant at our hotel.

The resturant was deserted with the exception of a few couples, so we got a whole booth to ourselves and was given exceptional service by the waiters. The table was beautifully laid with candles and roses with mood lighting in the resutrant with classical music playing in the background. The food was also amasing and was presented beautifully (as i would expect). I selected lamb cutlets with potatos and my fella chicken with vegetables. I got the the better deal. They had a great selection of wine and gave us a free glass of champagne and bread on the table. We placed the bill on the hotel tab and thankfully only had a short walk to the lift and back to our room!!

Overall a five out of five experience, pricey however as the bill came to over 130euros!!!

The Vatican City

We did not visit the Vatican City whilst we was in Rome, i had visited it before on a previous trip and we felt that we just wanted to relax. However from my previous experiences i would highly recommend a visit not only because the pope lives there, but the wealth of art and history that dominates that area. Our tour guide on the Collosium tour wanted us to go on there Vatican tour (which is only a few hours), and told us that it would take 30 years for one person to spend 30seconds with each object and painting in the buildings!!

Winding down over the next few days...

Our third and fourth days was spent wandering the streets looking at old fountations and museums, filling the days out with shopping and eating lots of pasta and drinking lots of wine and spending time relaxing together. We walked along a river during sunset and over rustic bridges, stopping in little coffee shops next to abandoned historic buildings, grabbing ice cream as we wandered around them as night fell.

Four days in Rome on a city break was a great way to get a taste of the city, however it was very expensive and overall i guess between us spent over £900.00. We did everything we wanted to do and had expectional service everywhere we went. The food and drink was always freshly made and of an expectional standard, and the coffee was of course amasing. (We have not managed to find cafe lattes to match them back home!)

I think in the middle of the current credit crunch, Rome is not the first place i would select. However if you love art, history and good food and wine, Italy is a wondeful place to visit on holiday. I give Rome on a four day visit 4 out of 5.
