Though under siege by tourists, many locals gladly frequent the Romeo, as there is a good deal that's authentic within its walls. (For one thing, the walls themselves are roughly 500 years old.) More important, besides the predictable taverna fare, are the number of local dishes on offer. The gracious and helpful waiters will happily explain and discuss the menu with you and accommodate special preferences whenever possible -- including vegetarian options. Two house specialties are the mixed fish grill and the stuffed souvlaki. For the grill, you select your own fish from a generous array of fresh deep-sea options -- the tender grilled octopus is especially good. The finely cut grilled souvlaki stuffed with melted cheese and tomatoes is a regional dish from the north end of the island. The very reasonably priced dry house wines go quite nicely with each entree. Set back in a quiet enclave, just off and out of the crush of Sokratous, Romeo offers both courtyard and roof-garden seating, as well as tasteful live traditional Greek music and song. If you're keen on a smoke-free environment, the air on the breezy roof garden is particularly fresh.
Advantages: The old perfectly marries the new Disadvantages: quite a bit of walking if it is hot.
...Rhodestown is divided into the new and the oldtown and both are well worth a visit.
Rhodestown is on a main harbour and the site of the 'Collosus of Rhodes'; one of the famed seven wonders of the world, a statue of the greek god Helios said to be 110 feet high and made of bronze, proudly marking the entrance to the harbour until destroyed by an earthquake in 248BC.
Facing the harbour you will find a huge choice of restaurants and cafes offering a wonderful range of Greek and European fayre, and the most deliscious cakes and pasteries.
Wherever you are in new Rhodestown you are never far away from the imposing gothic style walls of the medievel city.
The OldTown a majestic trip back in time. It is a walled city complete with a Palace of the Knights, it is large and very well preserved. Of course you have to expect...

...and chairs. We had a lovely, lower – key week, and hired a moped to explore more of the island. (Definitely not recommended and I wouldn’t do it now, car hire is excellent value and much, much safer).
Some of the places you have to see – most accessible by excursion if you don’t want to travel independently:
RhodesTown:
~~~~~~~~~~~
You have to see this place. The modern Island capital, centred on Mandraki harbour (want a ferry to Athens? Cairo? Marmaris?) , offering every mod-con in it’s cosmopolitan tree-lined boulevards. Some mad driving/road layouts though! And the incredible OldTown, preserved as a UNESCO world heritage site and influenced by the ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Crusading Knights, Turks and Italians who have all had a piece of the island over the centuries. An incredible...
Advantages: Excellent value at the price. Disadvantages: Few trimmings
...’d imagined. I rambled around Crete and Rhodes, using my newly learned Greek. Taking off on your own is a quite different experience from going on an arranged tour. I like to mix the two. But if you go off alone, please, please tell someone you are doing so, and speak a bit of the language, or have a good phrasebook with you. (My opinion on the Rough Guide phrasebooks may be of use).
The tours are a bit cheaper than Cunard, from £15-£40, depending on the length, and whether any refreshments are included. They are reasonable value for cruise tours, which are never cheap. Some passengers on cruises share taxis for a one or two hour private town tour, and this is a good option. Just agree on the price before you get in.
The ship’s crew are helpful, even if their manner is exhaustingly over-hearty, and there is access for disabled people, though...
