Room With a View Apartments, Reykjavik

Advantages: Beatiful, crowd-free, unspoiled
Disadvantages: Cold (just wrap up warm) and expensive

For those more active amongst you there is plenty to do here from whale watching to fishing, hiking to horse riding, and, very popular amongst Icelanders, swimming in outdoor geo-thermally heated outdoor pools, the most famous of which is The Blue Lagoon, 40 minutes outside of Reykjavik and possibly Iceland's most famous attraction. The Highlights ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~Hallgrimskirkja~~~ This modern, concrete, Lutheran cathedral, with its tall main tower, resembles a space rocket taking off, or probably more appropriately, a volcano erupting. It sits on a hill in the heart of Reykjavik and so as well as providing a useful ever visible landmark so that you always know where you are, it affords excellent views over the city. ...Reykjavik is the low key capital of Iceland with famous nightlife. It is also VERY VERY expensive. The Metropolitan was great as it offers cheap (for Iceland) accommodation close to the centre of town. I paid approx £40 per night for a single room in December, which was very cramped but clean, with ensuite facilities, fridge, TV and a double bed which was nice, although had to skirt round the edge of it to get to the shower room, etc. The building inside is cosy but dated and probably 40 years old and there is a tiny lounge (one couch by the front door) area by reception where you can wait for taxis, excursions etc. There is no real lounge space so you are limited to your room, and my room was limited, so that is a downside. The staff at the reception (to be honest it's more like someone's house converted) are lovely... Read review

Advantages: Central location in town, funky and chic hotel
Disadvantages: Feels like staying in IKEA without the advantage of it being cheap

...looks new apart from the staircase. The hotel has 88 rooms over 6 floors. The rooms consist of 30 standard rooms, 40 deluxe rooms, 16 junior suites and two luxury suites - the more you pay, the more you get. All rooms have heating and air con, en suite facilities, shower only in the smaller rooms, bath in others, toilet and basin. Complimentary soap, shampoo and body lotions are supplied in funky little pots (apple and fruit scented). The standard rooms all have a well-equipped but very expensive mini bar, room safe, TV with BBC, CNN etc, alarm call via phone, iron and ironing board and tea and coffee making facilities. The in-room information says that there are ice machines on every floor (there are not, but the staff in the Salt bar downstairs will give you some ice). Papers were not delivered although an English language news sheet... Read review
