***Getting There*** The reality is that you are unlikely to visit Australia to specifically stay in Rottnest and it will more than likely be a place for a day out or overnight stay. As we had free flights to Perth from Sydney then a day trip to Rottnest was a must. Exchange rate £1 = AUS$ 2.30/$1 = 43p ***History*** The island was named by the Dutch fleet captain Willem de Vlamingh on 29 December 1696. De Vlamingh described the indigenous marsupial called a quokka as a large rat ("rattenest" meaning "rat's nest" in Dutch). Between 1838 & 1931 it was used as a penal establishment for Aborogines ... more

The island is a popular holiday destination for both Australians and internationals alike, and attracts approximately 500,000 visitors every year. The island has a permanent population of roughly 400 people who all work on the island. Motorised vehicles on the island are restricted to public transport (buses and a train) ... more

If you're planning a visit to Perth, Australia, then you must go to Rottnest Island. It is about an hour's journey by ferry from Fremantle, a port only a few miles from Perth, much closer than most of the other nature attractions in Western Australia. They're used to human contact and are pretty tame and certainly not shy, especially if they think you have food (although you shouldn't feed ... more

travelling to Rotto (as the locals call it) can be done via regular shuttle ferries, by air or by your own boat. A limited bus service does run around the island, but walking and cycling is much prefered. You see more of the quokkas (local inhabitant) and wildlife. The accommodation ranges from a tent in tentland to a room at the hotel, with chalets inbetween. These are usually highly prized during the summer months with a lottery being held by the govt. There are several stores to replenish your drinks and for the alcoholic beverages- these can be purchased from the pub. If you want a casual ... more
