The bar offered local alcohol drinks free, and measures were very generous to the point of really strong, also tea and coffee and soft drinks all day long until the small hours. We found the bar staff to be very friendly. more
We went as a family of 4 (2 adults & 2 Children) in June last year (2006) for our 10th Wedding anniversary for 2 weeks.
Was greeted by a bellboy, and suitcases carried inside for us and to our room. This was approx 2am. The reception was very clean and on arrival was given a package each of fruit and a bottle of water. The bar was small and they had fitted as many chairs and settee's as possible inside, with extra seating outside that seemed to be ample at the time we went and the hotel was fully booked.
Our room was big enough for the 4 of us and we didn't feel that we were tripping over each other. We had a ground floor room (we had asked for the top floor due to the view when booking, but these things happen), we had a large balcony (these are only on the ground floor, they are much smaller on the top floors) with a great view of the sea. We had a double bed with lighting to each side of the bed, as well as the normal ceiling lighting. And a single bed with a bed underneth that we could pull out and push back in when we needed to. The safe was hiden in the wardrobe and was extra and not cheap!! Ample space for clothing in wardrobe and drawers, yet very little hangers to use (take your own). The tv was fine lots of channels yet only a few english channels to use and very limited to what was on there.
We had a great maid very chatty but had limited english although if you speak french she was great, i did see other maids and i don't think they cracked a smile. we gave a 20 LEV tip at the end of our holiday to her and you'd thought you'd given her the world she bear hugged the kids and was so thankful. The reception service was really good for our experience, happy and helpful and if we needed our rep would try and ring him or give a message to him, the changing of money at the reception was easy to deal with and they would explain if you didn't understand anything. At the end of our holiday we could put our luggage in a room especially for that and as you have to be out of the room for 12 noon i think it was, if there was a room available they would let you use it to shower and change, as we had to leave about 1am for our coach back to the airport. So you could still use the facilities through the day and not worry about having your luggage with you all day.
The food was local and internation food, you had to be careful how some of it looked but for the most part we only had breakfast and evening meal in our own hotel. There is the option for Traditional cooked breakfast, cereal, toast or fruit (not the freshest looking fruit i have seen). Evening meal had things like chips, curry, veal, veg, chicken nuggets (not everynight) and tradition Bulgarian Food.

In the village complex you have an entertainment hall were the staff put on shows most nights, plus you have a room with pool tables and games room. There was an internet room, that was normally busy with the teenagers.
When we booked our holiday we were told that there ws a childrens club that we could use and it was free with first choice!!!! This is true to some degree, The HOTEL offers a free childrens club which is very good there was a language barrier at times with some of the younger staff members but the children didn't really mind. First choice offers a kids club but is only free with the Royal Park hotel, if you stay at the Royal Bay Hotel then you do have to pay and it can get pretty pricey. At the time we went in the middle of June we were told that the dolphins were just moving on to the next place they go so that we may not see any. We had a huge suprise when we were eating our evening meal and a pod of dolphins came in really close to shore stayed for about 10 minutes then swam on. We didn't see them again.
If you decide you want something different to the food they offer at the resort and you don't want to go into Sunny Beach, then just outside the grounds of the resort is a little shack the food is amazing, drinks of any kind (you have to try the little calpol shots, they look like the kids medicine calpol) and they have music. This is where the reps hang out when not working.
The only disappointing part of our hoilday was when we wanted to go on the evening cruise for our anniversary night and we tried to book this but the rep could not be found we tried to book this a few days before and was told by the rep that he would be back tomorrow, tomorrow came and he was nowhere to be found, and we missed the cruise we wanted to go on. I'm not sure if he is still there, But first choice was told about him on our departure back.
The beach was lovely but you do have to get up early to get a bed, even though the reps ask you not to reserve a bed with your towel, they still do. the beach is man made and not a natural beach, on our last 2 days at the hotel we had a freak storm and as the hotel is built next to the mountain, the rain ran down the mountain and washed the beach away, there was little sand left on the beach only rocks, sunloungers being drifted away, and mud everywhere being washed down the mountain. The staff said they had never seen anything like that before, and the next day it was all staff hands on deck, outside the hotel was being hosed down of mud, and they really tried their hardest to make it as easy for the guests to adjust.
All in all i could not fault the hotel and staff and would definatly recommend this hotel to anyone

...didn't fit in at the Royal Bay. Not only was it undercooked, but I've seen less repetitive clocks, and I'm far from a fussy eater. It was the same old stuff day in and day out. In fact, the whole dining experience was pretty awful. You were told not to bring drinks in from the bar. Instead a waiter would come and offer you one. If I really wanted a drink, I'd still be sitting there now. The table cloths were never changed or even tidied during service, ... ...front of you. The plates were taken away; food was still left on the table cloth. You faced a ten minute quest to get your hands on a clean knife and fork. They were supposed to be put out again after being washed. There was more chance of finding a knife and fork at McDonalds. Instead you had to ferret around the draws they were put in, basically doing the waiters job for them.
If the whole dining experience wasn't bad enough, it was made worse ...

...a short walk to the royal park hotel for the reps show or whatever is going on in the animation hall. There are a few shops down there as well. The pool is ok and there are plenty of sunloungers though the pool looked dirty and was only cleaned out once a week on a sunday. As it was september we were plagued by wasps we were both stung as a result but the wasps which people had beaten with their flipflops were all over the place and in the pool. ... ...but the food at the royal bay wasn't for us. on the wednesday night after we after we arrived on the monday, my mum became ill with severe sickness and the 'other stuff'. It went on all night and she looked and felf awful. in the morning i phoned the rep for his advise and he said there was a medical center in the complex. My and mum went to it and straight away they said food poisoning. She was put on a drip and given tablets and pain relief then ...
