Flew with Royal Brunei in August 2007 from London to Brunei and return. Check in at Heathrow handled by Aviance well organised. They also have some of their own staff in RBA uniform handling the operation alongside Aviance. I got a fast track through security however the queues looked very long and I felt very sorry for those who had to stand in line. Waited at gate for around 30-40 minutes before boarding, which is done row-by-row from the front to the back of the aircraft. Once onboard the pilot notified us of a 15 minute delay due to congestion which is very normal at peak time for Heathrow (9:40 in the morning). We began taxying and then stopped at the runway where we waited for about 10 (yes, 10) other planes to tkae off before us.
Once we took off the entertainment system started. This is an average system which is AVOD - has your games, on-demand movies and looping video channels which showed planet earth and celebrity uncovered programmes, among some others. There was also a live map, and channel that showed our speed, time at destination etc. When we reached the cruising altitude the cabin crew came around offering a variety of refreshments: hot/cold drinks, packets of crisps and a lovely warm baguette which I thouroughly enjoyed. The crew cleaned up very efficiently after everyone had eaten etc and then came with another offering of drinks! I then watched one of the documentaries but mainly read and listened to music on the old mp3! I was surprised the meal service didnt happen until around 5pm - just over two hours before the fuel stop in Dubai. However they came round with drinks every 30-45 minutes so I cant complain, the meal when it arrived was nothing special, but when is plane food ever above average? On approach to DXB they showed a video about the city which was very informatice. Shame I would only be there for just over an hour!
After landing in Dubai we had a long taxi to the gate which seemed like an eternity, just passing by dozens of Emirates planes! Disembarking was fairly quick, then came the dreaded Dubai airport security checks! It would be an understatement to say they are thourough! But this isnt the airlines' fault and you cant blame Dubai for putting passenger safety first. Did a spot of shopping in the airport before returning to the gate at around 8:30pm and boarded almost straight away. Plane was hot and humid but thats the Dubai climate for you -- we were glad when the engines started and air conditioning kicked in. Taxi to the runway was quicker than the taxi into the gate at DXB! Had a time consuming wait for other planes to land but were soon underway. Post takeoff procedure mimicked the one after taking off at Heathrow. We were offered the refreshments again and I then took the chance to sleep after the lights were turned out to give us the chance for some rest. Woke up with five hours to go - and watched Shrek 3 on the personal TV in front of me, breakfast was served whilst I watched. I had a noodle dish which was quite spicy.
Landing at Brunei was uneventful and the only problem I had with the airport was the fact that the bags took a long time to come out, however I gave RBA the benefit of the doubt as a flight arrived from Sydney not long before us which made it much busier.
On the return journey, we arrived just before check in closed and thus there was no queue at the desk. Ground staff were alert and cheerful. It literally took me less than five minutes to get from the check in desk to the departure lounge as there were no security lines etc. Inside the dep. lounge there is a large duty free store and a smaller shop as well as some very up to date toilets and a coffee shop, internet cafe and souveneir place. Waited in the gate room for about 40 minutes which seemed like an age but once on board, wet towels were offered to freshen up before the journey. Mainly male crew on this leg, which was a contrast to the all woman crew on the outbound. Found the male stewards slightly more efficient. Take off was on time and we were served nuts and a drink on the usual post take off refreshment service. Meal was served not long after. I slept most of the journey to Dubai and before I knew it we had landed for the fuel stop (in DXB). Paid a quick visit to the duty free shop nearest to our gate and grabbed a bite to eat from McDonalds before returning to the gate at the assigned time. Had an hour delay due to a technical problem with the aircraft which went by very slowly. Once onboard chief purser asked us to step aside into some kind of "unknown zone" which was of course the Business cabin. We were lucky enough to be upgraded for the Dubai- London leg! once the engines started and we had a quick taxi to the runway and were soon in the air. Took advantage of " dine upon request" which basically means you eat your meal when you want which was very welcome. Seats were well used but very comfortable and the food was delicious. As a regular economy traveler, it was refreshing to get a good nights sleep (lie-flat seat). We were one of the first few arrivals into Heathrow. The taxi to the gate was very quick surprisingly, but this is at 6:30 in the morning! Not many queues for immigration which was surprising and was soon reunited with relatives in the UK. Overall a good experience and I wouldn't hesitate to fly Royal Brunei again. Recommend them to anyone.
Advantages: Cheap Disadvantages: Small aircraft, basic service
...in April 2000 and used Royal Brunei as the carrier. Admittedly my only criteria in booking with them were a) the price of the ticket - which was substantially lower than anything else available at the time;
b) the schedule - the timing of the flights matched my availability to perfection.
I wasn't expecting a lot for the price and people had told me that the service was fairly basic. I was generally happy with the flight and the cabin crew - bearing ... ...been far more comfortable with a 747-400 or a DC10 - even the Russian ILYUSHIN that Aeroflot are still managing to keep aloft was more comfortable than the dinky little thing used by Royal Brunei - but on a positive note it was only a quick walk to the loo!! ...

Advantages: Cheap. In flight crew are helpful. Seating is OK Disadvantages: No alcoholic drinks are served. Hub airport is boring
Royal Brunei Airlines-known as RBA in the South East Asian region-has grown considerably since its formation back in 1974,when it commenced operations with two Boeing 737-200 aircraft. The RBA pilot-an expatriate-made it fairly clear that he was annoyed that a scheduled flight was being held up.
I have found the in flight service to be quite good on RBA. The cabin crew are recruited from the likes of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Vietnam-I guess there are also a few but not many from Brunei. They are very helpful to passengers and try ...

...to read other opinions on Royal Brunei Airlines and thought that I would add mine as I was most impressed by them. I was due to fly to Oz from London in April and having travelled economy Down Under previously I said to myself never again! Royal Brunei, being a Moslem airline is 'dry' but if you fly business or first you may take on your own alcohol if you wish. The 'travel pack' given contained a very good selection of toiletries, and the usual toothbrush/toothpaste/socks etc. Stopovers for refuelling mean that you can use the business class lounges again where you can smoke, drink, eat, snooze in comfort until someone collects you for boarding again. All in ...

Advantages: Modern fleet Disadvantages: Limited route network
I have flown on Royal Brunei Airlines four times on the Kuala Lumpur - Bandar Seri Bagawan and Bandar Seri Bagawan Miri sectors. and also from BSB to Kota Kinabalu.
The RBA fleet is a modern one and I found it to be a punctual airline. I was also impressed with the ground services at Bandar seri Bagawan airport. The in flight service is quite acceptable and I noticed that Cathay Pacific,RBA have a multi ethnic cabin crew. On my flights there were ... ...among the flight attendants was very good.
The in flight magazine is quite a good read and the cuisine seemed to me to be fairly good, without being distinguised. The in flight entertainment system is not particularly outstanding and pales,eg,in comparison to that of SIA.
RBA run an airport restaurant at BSB airport and it really is good. I have enjoyed the meals there and reckon it is one of the best places for the visitor to eat in the Brunei ...

Advantages: Value, Stopovers, Service Disadvantages: Does not serve alcohol, Small aircraft
I have flown with Royal Brunei every year for the past 5 years and have covered almost all their longhaul routes and can thoroughly recommend it! It is one of a small number of international airlines that serve my parents' home city of Calcutta in India, and their routes also include some prominent Middle East, Far East and Australian destinations. If you are lucky enough to be wanting to fly to these cities - you could do much worse than flying ... ...comfort compares admirably to other more well-known carriers. I'm not short and I can easily stretch my legs even whilst sitting down. The food choices consist of a "destination" meal (Indian or Far Eastern) and a Western style meal at each meal and both are invariably very good. All special diets are catered for with 24 hrs notice. Their biggest aircraft is a Boeing 767 - hence there are regular refuelling stops. A trip to Brisbane could involve ...

Advantages: fairly polite staff who all speak and understand English Disadvantages: overly laid back staff, no cash point machines
and me it's a fraction of what one would pay for a black cab or minicab over here in the UK. The airport itself is 20km away from the main city and the outer roads actually are quite well maintained and offer a smooth journey for the weary traveller.
FACTUAL INFO ABOUT THE AIRPORT
International routes operating include Air India, British Airways, Gulf Air, KLM, Singapore Airlines, Thai, Bangladesh Biman, RoyalBruneiAirlines and Royal Jordanian.
Most of the domestic airlines have direct services to and from the airport to other important places in India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Patna, Lucknow and Bangalore

for only a few short days but where I had felt universally welcomed by the people of Bali.
Getting to Bali
Okay, now that your appetite is whetted let's get the details out of the way to make room for more flavour. There are no direct flights to Bali because it is too far even for long range aircraft, which would run out of fuel and have to land in the ocean.
Return flights from Heathrow to Denpasar, Bali's capital, are usually via Singapore, Bangkok or Hong Kong. Flights with Singapore Air, RoyalBruneiAirlines and Cathay Pacific can be found online at www.opodo.com and www.lastminute.com between £400 and £600. It pays to book well in advance if you want to keep costs down.
The flight takes around 17 hours depending on stop-overs and our choice is Singapore Air because the staff are friendly, the food is okay, the seats ...
Advantages: Decent check-in staff (sometimes) Disadvantages: Usually late, snotty service more often than not
Even though I'm Irish, I have to say that I'm not particularly proud of our state airline. Having flown with them about 20 times in the last year, I can say with a degree of authority that they are one of the tardiest airlines out there. Of the 20 flights, at least 17 were over 20 minutes late, of which 6 of those were over an hour late. Maybe I'm just unlucky, but I haven't had the same problem with other airlines that I've flown (British Airways, Luxair, KLM, Crossair, Ryanair, British Midland, Delta, RoyalBrunei).
The whole Aer Lingus experience is nothing exceptional either - steward/esses tend to have delusions of superiority more often than not, while the food is unplentiful. Most Dublin-London flights seem to offer no more than a packet of peanuts by way of nourishment.
All-in-all, disappointing, and I tend to avoid them ...
