Flew with Royal Brunei in August 2007 from London to Brunei and return. Check in at Heathrow handled by Aviance well organised. They also have some of their own staff in RBA uniform handling the operation alongside Aviance. I got a fast track through security however the queues looked very long and I felt very sorry for those who had to stand in line. Waited at gate for around 30-40 minutes before boarding, which is done row-by-row from the front to the back of the aircraft. Once onboard the pilot notified us of a 15 minute delay due to congestion which is very normal at peak time for Heathrow (9:40 in the morning). We began taxying and then stopped at the runway where we waited for about 10 (yes, 10) other planes to tkae off before us.

Once we took off the entertainment system started. This is an average system which is AVOD - has your games, on-demand movies and looping video channels which showed planet earth and celebrity uncovered programmes, among some others. There was also a live map, and channel that showed our speed, time at destination etc. When we reached the cruising altitude the cabin crew came around offering a variety of refreshments: hot/cold drinks, packets of crisps and a lovely warm baguette which I thouroughly enjoyed. The crew cleaned up very efficiently after everyone had eaten etc and then came with another offering of drinks! I then watched one of the documentaries but mainly read and listened to music on the old mp3! I was surprised the meal service didnt happen until around 5pm - just over two hours before the fuel stop in Dubai. However they came round with drinks every 30-45 minutes so I cant complain, the meal when it arrived was nothing special, but when is plane food ever above average? On approach to DXB they showed a video about the city which was very informatice. Shame I would only be there for just over an hour!

After landing in Dubai we had a long taxi to the gate which seemed like an eternity, just passing by dozens of Emirates planes! Disembarking was fairly quick, then came the dreaded Dubai airport security checks! It would be an understatement to say they are thourough! But this isnt the airlines' fault and you cant blame Dubai for putting passenger safety first. Did a spot of shopping in the airport before returning to the gate at around 8:30pm and boarded almost straight away. Plane was hot and humid but thats the Dubai climate for you -- we were glad when the engines started and air conditioning kicked in. Taxi to the runway was quicker than the taxi into the gate at DXB! Had a time consuming wait for other planes to land but were soon underway. Post takeoff procedure mimicked the one after taking off at Heathrow. We were offered the refreshments again and I then took the chance to sleep after the lights were turned out to give us the chance for some rest. Woke up with five hours to go - and watched Shrek 3 on the personal TV in front of me, breakfast was served whilst I watched. I had a noodle dish which was quite spicy.

Landing at Brunei was uneventful and the only problem I had with the airport was the fact that the bags took a long time to come out, however I gave RBA the benefit of the doubt as a flight arrived from Sydney not long before us which made it much busier.

On the return journey, we arrived just before check in closed and thus there was no queue at the desk. Ground staff were alert and cheerful. It literally took me less than five minutes to get from the check in desk to the departure lounge as there were no security lines etc. Inside the dep. lounge there is a large duty free store and a smaller shop as well as some very up to date toilets and a coffee shop, internet cafe and souveneir place. Waited in the gate room for about 40 minutes which seemed like an age but once on board, wet towels were offered to freshen up before the journey. Mainly male crew on this leg, which was a contrast to the all woman crew on the outbound. Found the male stewards slightly more efficient. Take off was on time and we were served nuts and a drink on the usual post take off refreshment service. Meal was served not long after. I slept most of the journey to Dubai and before I knew it we had landed for the fuel stop (in DXB). Paid a quick visit to the duty free shop nearest to our gate and grabbed a bite to eat from McDonalds before returning to the gate at the assigned time. Had an hour delay due to a technical problem with the aircraft which went by very slowly. Once onboard chief purser asked us to step aside into some kind of "unknown zone" which was of course the Business cabin. We were lucky enough to be upgraded for the Dubai- London leg! once the engines started and we had a quick taxi to the runway and were soon in the air. Took advantage of " dine upon request" which basically means you eat your meal when you want which was very welcome. Seats were well used but very comfortable and the food was delicious. As a regular economy traveler, it was refreshing to get a good nights sleep (lie-flat seat).
We were one of the first few arrivals into Heathrow. The taxi to the gate was very quick surprisingly, but this is at 6:30 in the morning!
Not many queues for immigration which was surprising and was soon reunited with relatives in the UK. Overall a good experience and I wouldn't hesitate to fly Royal Brunei again. Recommend them to anyone.
