THE ROYAL YACHT - DEBENHAMS?
On this occasion I was not driving and therefore did not have to find my way to the Royal Yacht, just as well, because without the aid of road signs I would never have found it - even having visited the dock some seven years previously. Since that visit, the dock area of Leith has changed out of all recognition.
You should not actually get lost approaching the site by road, there are the familiar brown tourist signs to guide you - you will wonder if you have arrived at the right place when you get there though. There are direct bus services from the centre...

...Cairns is a strange place in that you do not really go to Cairns to experience Cairns. It is more of a focal point for exploring other areas around it. That is to say that Cairns has not got lots of attractions in it's own right because it has but the vast majority of visitors will use it as a stopping off place to see both Cairns and other attractions. After our trip to Ayers Rock, Cairns was totally different but equally appealing.

Discovered by Captain Cook in 1770 it took a further 100 years before white settlers took hold, mainly due to the wet weather, vegetation and treacherous reefs. The finding of gold in "them thar hills" put Cairns firmly on the map in 1876 as a frontier town. Banks - Most Australian banks are within 5 minutes walking distance. Opening hours is Monday to Thursday 9.30am to 4pm and Friday is 9.30am to 5pm.
Tax Office - there is none in Cairns. The closet one is in Townsville.
Supermarket - Coles and Bi-Lo are located in Cairns central upstairs just across the road. Opening hours is Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm, Saturday 8am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 6pm.
Police - the station is located at 5 Sheridan Street. If needed call 4030 7000 and in an emergency call 000.
Doctor- A 24 medical centre is located on the corner of Florence and Grafton Streets. They do a dive medical and make house calls if required. Phone number is 40521119, and after hour...
