The hotel is very grand indeed and would be a lovely place to take your most precious partner for a luxurious break and a bit of pampering. It really is 5 star in all aspects.
The rooms are sumptious and the decor is right out of an antique catalogue, the clientelle are all well heeled and the atmosphere is like out of a 1930's novel with Brits abroad emulating the grand tour of the 18th century.
As we are in Italy, it goes without saying that the food was gorgeous throughout our stay and the Italian style pervades every single aspect of the experience. Sheer style and Class!
The staff are snobbish and a bit aloof though, my wife couldnt get the attention of the waiter for a coffee until I (the man) waved for attention and he came over immediately, Claire was not much impressed by that!
San Remo is one of those locations on the Continent where most people have heard of, Alfred Nobel's house is there and of course the Casino! The town is typically Italian and is remarkably easily managed. The food was EXCELLENT everywhere we tried!
The traffic is dreadful, and I certainly would not recommend a driving holiday as you are likely to get killed on the road!
BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE TRAFFIC AS THE PEDESTRIAN IS A VERY LOW FORM OF LIFE IN ITALY AND CONSIDERED TARGET PRACTICE FOR THE LOCAL DRIVERS!
We played tennis at the hotel's courts and enjoyed the (lovely) pool and the obligatory tourist traps around the area.
I am not sure if children would find this hotel much fun because of its formality and the steep outside steps would be daunting to older or infirmed travellers, however, for a romantic place to visit, this hotel is very good and the only downside is the SNOBBERY encountered with SOME of the hotel staff!
If you can stay a few nights it would be a taster of the finer things in life, the way that the rich people live and all that, you may like you may not but it is certainly would a try.

Manufacturer's product description
Inaugurated in 1872, Royal Hotel San Remo is an exclusive 5-star hotel, just perfect for guests to relax in a setting where tradition, refinement and modern comfort combine with warm hospitality, attentive and personalised service. Though long past its heyday, this resort is a big name because of its size and facilities, including a private beach across the road. Royal San Remo is a deluxe resort hotel uniquely located on the charming Italian Riviera of Flowers, with a splendid view of San Remo. Close to the center of town in a quiet, spacious sub-tropical garden. 133 rooms and suites with all modern amenities, spacious lobby with live music in the evenings. The guest rooms vary considerably: Some are tennis-court size with private balconies, many have sea views, and others face the hills. The furnishings range from traditional to modern. There are three restaurants at the hotel: Veranda-Restaurant ``Fiori di Murano'' with beautiful view over the park and the sea, the Gourmet Restaurant ``Il Giardino'' for al fresco candlelit dining in the intimacy of the park and finally, the Restaurant-Pool-Bar ``Corallina'' next to the swimming-pool.
