On the last bank holiday Monday we set off from our house in Hampshire, early (6.20am) to meet up with my sister inlaw and a friend of my husbands and then we all set off in convoy for North Devon.
Having gone the scenic route, my hubby likes winding up the other men you see, up Porlock Hill which is a notorious steep hill just past Minehead in Somerset on the way to Ilfracombe, the journey took us six hours with a few stops for food and toilets.
We finally arrived at the campsite at just after 1pm and by this time the children were more than slightly bored being in the car.
First impressions of the campsite were that it looked clean well managed and organised. This opinion only got better as we noticed litter being picked up daily and the rubbish being collected from your tent twice daily and they even provided us with a new black bag every time they took a full one!
Anyway after finding the correct pitch we all bundled out of the car and I took my daughter Lucy to the nearby adventure playground which was not really for a two year old but she managed ok.
By the time we returned to our pitch, having passed (and inspected) the toilet and shower block, the tent was fully errected and the airbeds were being blown up.
The thing that really struck me was the view, it was breathtaking we were overlooking a beach (owned by the Holiday Park) called Croyde bay and this is the most gorgeous setting for a holiday.
This holiday Park is well equipped with loads of things to do for all the family, there are kids clubs during the day and a soft play area with designated times for different age groups. There is also a swimming pool/water park type thing which is open to the public as well as residents, we didn't try this at all but my sister in-law's children did and they really enjoyed it, for residents it costs £1.25 for an hour (under 2's free), there are pictures of this pool on the website mentioned below.
Also at the park are lots of pubs and bars a beer garden, 2 Tennis Courts, 2 Fishing Lakes, Surf Hire Shop, La Plage Boutique, Adventure Playground, Smuggler's Rest Beach Cafe & Gift Shop, Bike & Go-Cart Hire, Supermarket, End of the Pier Arcade, Chef's Corner Snackbar, Beach Bar and Bella's Kitchen Restaurant.
Saying all this though we had totally forgotten about most of these things by the time we were on holiday and even though we were given all the information again once we had arrived we didn't read it and didn't really make use of all the facilities.
In the evening they have loads of entetainment on including bingo and there is even a film showing and nightly discos for the teenagers.
This site really is for all ages and is very well set out and organised.
The other facilites include laundrette etc for those boring chores if you like that kind of thing. There was also an internet cafe recently opened but I never got there I think I would have been shot if I had even hinted about going in there!
The week we went cost £22 per pitch per night, they also have static caravans, fields for motor homes and tourers, separate lodges, one house and one cottage. Everything you could wnat from a self catering holiday really. If you want details of the prices you should go to http://www.ruda.co.uk/ which the official wensite on their too you can see the wonderful pictures of where we stayed but they aren't as good as actually seeing it first hand.
This Holiday Park is sitauted south of Woolacombe and Ilfracombe and the nearest and best town is Barnstaple and this is of course North Devon.
We visited Bude which is just in Cornwall and took us a couple of hours to get there. There are lots of attractions in this area too and most of these can be found on the above website.
We had a great time even though we had some horrible wet weather we still enjoyed ourselves.
Having just completed the selections below I note that I forgot to mention that this campsite included all ages, surfers teenagers, families, couples.
Advantages: Location, great accommodation, facilities. Disadvantages: Weather, local transport.
...I think I've stayed at Ruda Holiday Park 1, 2, 3…7 times! I first visited when I was only 12 years old. We returned a year later and, well, just got in the habit of going back year after year.
I think the main reason for our repeated visits is the convenience of everything. Ruda Holiday Park is in the beachside village of Croyde Bay, North Devon - close to Woolacombe. From the site it is only about a 2 minute walk to Croyde Bay beach, so no expensive ... ...adds to its charm.
Ruda Holiday Park is aimed at families, but you'll find couples, pensioners, teenagers, surfers all taking advantage of what it has to offer. I'm well into my twenties and still enjoying it. I can't guarantee what kind of weather you'll get here, but I can guarantee you'll have a great time. ...

Advantages: Right on the beach Disadvantages: Seaguls!
I recently stayed at the Ruda Holiday Park, Croyde Bay in Devon for a short break, camping, reading and drinking cider.
The choice sites to stay in in Croyde isn't massive and I think that it is fair to say that Ruda has the monopoly in the area, with such a large site right on the 'Blue Flag' golden beach.
Prices were reasonable at £13 per pitch per night in July (pitches are big enough to fit 3 or 4 two man tents on, and have ample space for ... ...01271 890 477 Ruda Holiday Park Croyde Bay, North Devon OR

There's also a range of self-catering accommodation at Ruda Holiday Park. You can choose from lodges or beachside apartments, a value-for-money caravan holiday home or latest model with central heating, double glazing and DVD player.!
So it said! I though prefer my tent!
I would reccommend this place to all, especially if you have a young family, peaceful yet ...

Advantages: Near the Beach Disadvantages: Expensive for what you get and paying extra for swimming pool
On a return visit - and after upgrading to supposedly a better caravan and paying the difference, all I can say that it was incredibly disappointing. Earwigs in the fridge and an oven looking like it had not been cleaned since the caravan was bought. Windows cracked, cobwebs everywhere and filthy crockery and cutlery. Verandah covered in ancient bird droppings and totally unsafe patio set. We had been given a private caravan that had become available ... ...in some respects. Upon complaining they were apologetic but following the holiday we were offered a mere £50 off our next holiday there with an explanation that unfortunately sometimes things go wrong. Certainly will not go again or recommend it. Staff were apologetic but considering we had been kept waiting in the car part for some 5 hours because the caravan was waiting to be cleaned it was a total fabrication. There is no way it had been cleaned. ...

Advantages: Great location and very good amenities Disadvantages: Caravans are a bit small
We just got back from a week's stay at this holiday camp. It was fantastic! I don't think it would be possible to find a better location in Britain. The countryside is gorgeous, as were all the beaches in the area. The beach at Croyde Bay is right there at the camp - it's actually owned by Parkdean. The village is almost too pretty to believe, with charming thatched cottages. There are three good pubs, a post-office and small shop, and a restaurant ... ...one of the caravans. it was clean and and had a well-equipped kitchen. One warning: the twin beds are too small for tall adults. The kids got on just fine on them, and the inlaws had the double, but I and my husband ended up sleeping in the lounge.
The camp had plenty of good amenities. There was a grocery store, chippy, games arcade, restaurant with a pub, and Costa coffee shop that served breakfast, as well as having a couple of PAY-GO Internet ...

Advantages: Beach, Bay, Village Atmosphere Disadvantages: Tourists (but we all are)
slippery so unless you are happy getting your feet wet you need to be very careful.
Croyde offers a range of accommodation. There are the B&B?s which line the road entering the village, rooms at The Thatch and also adequate camping and caravan sites. Our friends camped at the RudaHolidayPark. On visiting them I was very impressed by the size of the park, the facilities there and also the washroom/toilet/shower block. Unlike a lot of campsites, these were a good size, solid fixed facilities and not your average portaloos. The reason I don?t camp is because I dislike the lack of good facilities on campsites, but I would happily camp at Ruda.
Ruda is right next to the beach but a 10minute walk into the heart of Croyde.
Staying in Croyde was an absolute joy and I wouldn?t hesitate to return. This beautiful village unfortunately is not ...
Advantages: Tons of stuff to do, never ever boring Disadvantages: Its not Newquay
If anyone is thinking of venturing away from home over summer but don't fancy going abroad because of the cost and risk, try visiting Croyde Bay in North Devon. I personally have been visiting this part of the world for 17 years now and I'm 18 this summer. Croyde Bay is ideal for the 18-30 range its a bit quieter than Newquay and a bit of a lack of a nightlife but when the weather is good things pick up. It has some of the best beaches in the country and they really are good. When we go we usually stay in a caravan park called "Rudaholidaypark", it has all the trimmings and is pretty hard to faulter. Theres an amusement arcade for the younger ones, a sort of SPAR type shop, a big swimming pool with slides and stuff, a big club which includes things for all ages from childrens entertainment to a makeshift nightclub which goes on into ...
Advantages: Beautiful, stunning views. Disadvantages: Gets very busy
of the best destinations in north Devon for surfing and during the summer months the beach is very busy with surfers but with a great age variety, even small children can be seen in the little wet suits and body boards.
~Campsites~
There are about 10 campsites around croyde some are only open for a few months of the year and are aimed for the surfers others are very family orientated the main one is called RudaHolidayPark which is where we used to stay when I was a child.
It has changed quite a bit since we used to go but still remains the favourite for many families and they return year after year like we used to.
When we were there years ago it was quite basic, you had your club house for entertainment and a few shops and a game room but that was about it, but now you have allsorts which include a tropical pool which has a flume ...
