General ======
The Russ Hill, Chatwood, is a 2 star hotel, with just over 150 rooms. It advertised in some places as a 3 star hotel, and can only be described as fast food style in a hotel. A MacHotel so to speak. We stayed here when waiting to fly out on holiday last year, and also when we returned.
It was an online purchase from a hotel selling group and it was I have to say very cheap to purchase. You buy your room (only) no breakfast provided. The hotel is primarily catering for those going on package holidays. You can book your car in for a holiday stay also. We flew in from Belfast so did not have to avail of this service. They have lots of parking space and I got the impression that this was a major income stream for the Hotel.
There was no porter service, no lift and are room was some distance from the reception, we were both out of breath when we got to the room.
Courtesy Bus ===========
I suppose my review come accross as purely negative to date, and I suppose that's a bit unfair of me. The hotel was chosen purely on price, and to meet a sleep over requirement that we needed. The Russ Hill, is extremely functional and efficient at the service they provide. The bus service is excellent and not that expensive at £2.50 per person. We were able to book our time for the bus the next morning and reserve our place.
Food and Drink ============
When we got in the first night we stayed we could not get food which was a little disappointing for a hotel promoting themselves as a 24 hour service catering specifically for an onward journey. I accept it was a hotel, however we had a drink in the bar which we found ver expensive, as expensive as an airport lounge. The bar was basic, not clean. In fact I have to say that the whole hotel was spotless clean.
Room =====
The rooms were small boxs, no mini bar and the TV did not have good reception, again not what I expected from a hour service catering specifically for an onward journey. We felt we were going to bash into each other with each movement. Again I would have to say that it was spotless clean.
Booking =======
The room cost us £45 per night, purchased from an onlin holiday group. The hotel charges approxmately twice that if you book directly from them. They state the difference is as the Hotel Website bulk buys them from them and then sells them on. Make sure you purchase well ahead if you want to get the best reduction in price.
Overall ======
You get what you pay for, and I rated it excellent for value for money, and this is whole fair, my headline comments would be as follows;
Not where to go for a "Romantic" weekend away venue, if however you are travelling out of Gatwick and particulalry if you need to store a car then this is an option to consider.
Bring a packet of sandwiches if you are hungry!!!!!
