When deciding I wanted to go on a trip around the world I emailed several companies for flight quotes, based on our ideas at the time. We then went into STA Travel (Leeds, city centre) for a quick quote, hoping they'd give us more information. This was a quick quote and the assistant just said what we could have found out online. I was hoping for tips/advice like X place increases your flight price, going this way around the world works better etc. However it wasn't to be. We were happy with the rough quote given though and for that reason and the fact that if we booked with STA everything was booked in the same place and we have the security of branches all over the world we decided we'd book our round the world trip with them.
Several months later we decided we'd book but unfortunately couldn't get an appointment when we wanted with the assistant who gave us the inital quote so we agreed to see a different person. This was a bit annoying at first but we thought that we might get a different opinion on things. This worked out for the better as this assistant was AMAZING!
We went in for our appointment knowing exaclty which tours we wanted to do so thought we'd be out and booked within an hour or so. No chance!!! We spend 4 and a half hours in there!
We talked through our trips and what we wanted to do with STA who pieced it together and suggested things. She was very knowledgeable and if she didn't know there was someone in the office who did, failing that she'd ring up the tour company concerned to get us an answer.
There are two negatives that I can find with STA travel, these being that unless you are strong willed they will take you for a ride and get all the commission they can by joining you on to as many tours as possible. Stay strong and do what you want and you'll be fine! The other negative I found was that once we'd booked everything and got our reciept there was a booking fee on, fair enough we'd spent ages in there and she was ace but this could have been mentioned.
We booked ages ago and are still to depart yet we feel happy and comfortable emailing/calling to ask any questions and these are usually answered promptly.
Definately book there if you know what you want. If you just have ideas or want advice, go in get the adivce then go back and book so you've time to think about it and aren't taken for a ride.

Advantages: All the benefits of STA (good prices, well-travelled and helpful staff etc) combined with no queues, you can take your time Disadvantages: You might not get an expert in the region you're travelling to; some innacuracies in their information system?
