This was out 5th visit to Finish Lapland - we went in Feb 09 travelling with Inghams
our flight was from gatwick and we flew into Kittila - which is a very small airport and the main airport for guest going to Levi and Yllas - despite there being an airport near Saariselka Inghams do not fly there - they go to Kittila and then transfer you by coach to Saariselka - the journey takes 3 hours and was something that I was dreading - however ... ...the seats reclined
we stayed in the detached log cabins, they were very rustic but fab, just looking out onto the trees and snow was magical
there is plenty of choice of accommodation on Saariselka so it has something for everyone
The town itself is small and compact, having already been to Yllas and Levi I had something to compair it against - the town has more hills and trees that the other two resorts, ... more

we stayed in the detached log cabins, they were very rustic but fab, just looking out onto the trees and snow was magical
there is plenty of choice of accommodation on Saariselka so it has something for everyone
The town itself is small and compact, having already been to Yllas and Levi I had something to compair it against - the town has more hills and trees that the other two resorts, it has a much more sofisicated and chic feel about it, the little shops are wonderful and just walking around the town with all the trees just made it special, there are ice sculptures outside one place and burning logs outside another, just wonderful and with it being so compact you don;'t have to walk miles to get anywhere like you do in yllas and it's not as commercial as levi, it still has shops etc but they just seem more chic - lots of little craft stores with quality items - there are the odd tacky shop for those who want some tack ;-)
just out of the town there is the taboggon run, so much fun for everyone, people of all ages were playing, this is something you don't get in yllas and you taboggon down the main slope in levi but it's nothing like the taba run in saariselka - it's a hell of a hike to the top but well worth it - you can get the ski bus to the top if you prefer
we also skiied here, the ski resort is very small with about 12 runs, as a beginner I found them very steep and have never expereienced such steep blue runs - it took me some time to get used to them but when I did nothing was going to stop me - if you are an advanced skiier then this may not have the variety of runs that you want but for me and my family it is perfect
Out of all the places I have been, saariselka is not only the best in finish lapland for me but also probably one of the best places I have been ever and I can not wait to go back - so if you want to go to lapland then I highly recommend saariselka - it's worth it - it has the rual wildness of yllas and the facilities of levi all in one fantasic resort
Advantages: Fantastic experience Disadvantages: Can get pricey with all the activities
4 night staying at The Fell Centre Kiilopää turned out to be the best money ever spent. Although not cheap - the experience you get is absolutly amazing.
We stayed 3 days and 3 nights and embarked on an Arctic Safari (Legend of Four Winds), skiing at Ski Saariselka, cross country skiing at our resort and pancake making in an original Lappish Maahinen.
Although this area is expensive - the scenery and magic of it is worth the money in gold. Never have been one for being at one with nature, but the spirit of Lappish nature is what enchanted me. Beware though - it IS as cold as you think. Wearing ski clothes pretty much all the time was our only way of keeping warm!
100% reccommend to any family or couple - see the magic yourself! ...
Advantages: has lots fo offer Disadvantages: is more built up than other resorts
time we had in yllas at christmas which I think in hindsite was wrong, this was a different holiday and we should have taken it as such
in hindsite it was a good holiday and it levi does have a lot to offer, it has a great ski resort which has a lot to offer for all levels, it has a lot of resturants, shops and bars to go to should you want to, it does not have the village remote feel that yllas has but it still is magical in it;s own way - I think this place is a good bet for families with older children who can go for a burger etc on their own or with friends or for people who want to have more options of eating out etc
however, now that I have been to saariselka I only have eyes for saariselka, which has all the facilities of levi (such as bars etc) but all the charm and nature of yllas - it really has it all
if you want to go to ...

Advantages: magical walks through the woods Disadvantages: maybe getting a but too commercial?
well the cold just bit through it all, especially our faces - we still had a magical time but found a lot of changes in yllas, the supermarkedtwas now massive and there were burger bars etc, it was still magical especially on new year but it was very busy and I suppose it will never live up to the memories it gave us of our first visit
I do highly recommend yllas if you want a magical time in lapland with some bars and resturants but now having being to saariselka I recommend that over anywhere else but the transfer may not suit everyone so if you can't go there then yllas is a close second ...
