SACRAMENTO HOSTEL
I stayed here during October 2000 and was delighted by the location, the rooms and the price! For about £10 a night I stayed in a private room of this converted 1885 mansion.

LOCATION The hostel is located in a quiet residential area of Sacramento, amongst rows of trees - we felt safe in this area. It is only a short walk from the Greyhound /train station and from the shops and facilities. Although only a short distance from the Greyhound station, be careful when walking here in the dark - we found the station ...

Advantages: Beautiful and close to San Fran Disadvantages: Not a lot there
When i visited Sacramento it was only for a day while i was in San Fransisco, but it was a day that was just right. The town is situated on the side of the bay and is a real riviera type setting. The inhabitants are all friendly (and give of the impression of much money) and are more than willing to help. Food in the area is great and if you are staying locally then the hotels I saw also looked of a good standard. It is a place that allows easy access ... ...the city too much. You are also in easy reach of the giant redwoods just to the north west. The marina at Sacremto hosts many sleek sailing veels and there are trips around the bay. I was told also that there are a few extremly nice beaches just a few miles to the west although the water is cold.
If you want my advice, visit Sacremento and grab a huge ice-cream and walk along the waterside in the afternoon sun. So idylic it aches. ...

Advantages: Climate, interesting, variety of cultures and life-styles Disadvantages: Expensive, Parking places hard to find, cost a lot, too!
...I moved to SacramentoCalifornia when I was 18 years old, thanks to a free one-way ticket compliments of Uncle Sam when I enlisted in the army. Sacramento was HOT, at least as far as the weather was concerned, so I found myself escaping to San Francisco, which was less than a two hour drive occasionally. San Francisco is always cooler, it was normally about 60-65 degrees farenheit during the day time, as I recall.~~~~~There are many things to do and see in San Francisco, and unfortunately, I did not experience as many as I would have liked to. The Golden Gate bridge is immense and incredible. Many people walk across the bridge for a thrilling experience, and some even jump off, to commit suicide. (Not recommended) Pier 39 is a shopper's and touristy paradise. It is never boring on Pier 39. There are people who live on the streets...

Advantages: Flight on time Disadvantages: no major ones
...I flew to sacramento ,Cali over the christmas holiday. This was my second trip to california- the first airline i used was United Airlines -which was okay but over the christmas period any cheap flight would have done! That is how i stumbled into Continental airlines, the fare was fair in comparison to the other airlines which were charging exorbitant prices.
I was flying from gatwick- the continental check -in is separated from the main area ,which was a relief afta seeing the chaos around the easy jet and virgin nigeria airline desk.
The queque was long but i have made a mental note to get there 3 hours earlier next time. Check in was fine. The queque to get thru the security gates was a nightmare but that was no fault ofthe airline but of gatwick airport.
My first leg was a 10 hour flight to Houston. on first impressions the flight...

Advantages: Great place if you like desrts and heat. Good as part of a circular tour with CA Disadvantages: A lot of driving. Nowhere is very near anywhere else
...One of our fly-drive holidays to California also took in some of Nevada.
Setting out from San Francisco, we headed inland via Sacramento, the state capital of CA, staying long enough to visit the Transport Museum - if you think some of the locomotives in York Musuem are big, you should see these!
Pressing on over the Donner Pass, scene of that tragic over-wintering by the trapped Donner party on their way west, we entered Nevada and stayed at Reno overnight. As the sign over the road says, The Greatest Little City in the World". It certainly doesn't take its role as casino town too seriously compared with Las Vegas, but more of that later. What's more important at the end of a long drive, is that it's packed with cheap places to eat, some of them casinos.
Then it was off in a southerly direction, and back into CA, staying at Mammoth...
