The Sagamore is located in Miami's trendySouth Beach area close to the beach, shops, bars and restaurants, however there are many hotels to choose from in this district. This hotel was suggested to us by our travel agent for its great location and facilities but we were sceptical as it describes itself as an 'Art Hotel' - made me wonder whether the atmosphere would be stuffy and pretentious. On entering the hotel, art is very much in evidence with a selection of chairs and tables that look more like scuptures (some of which have notices telling you not to sit on them). However the reception staff were very welcoming. The elevator is a sight to behold, being lined with black alligator skin (real or fake) and minimal lighting - very 'Austin Powers'! We were impressed with our room even though there was no sea view, we were given a suite with a separate living room complete with corner sofa and full kitchen (including dishwasher!). ALthough there were only two of us, this room could easily serve as an apartment for four, especially as the bathroom & toilet were separate and could be accessed from either the bedroom or living areas. The beds and linen were comfortable and the room was quiet at night despite being above a busy street. Continental breakfast was included in our room rate, consisting of bagels, preserves etc. and was quite adequate although you could order a cooked breakfast for an extra charge. Art is in evidence throughout the hotel and we enjoyed looking at the black and white photographs displayed throughout the breakfast area. The hotel has a small pool and an imaginatively landscaped patio area with a bar. There are plenty of loungers and towels are free of charge. If you prefer the beach it is right behind the hotel, guests have their own area of the beach with loungers and umbrellas, although you do have to pay for these. The hotel also has its own spa and treatment area, I did not try these but spoke to other guests who had enjoyed a massage. Although there is also a 'gym' it is very small with only a couple of pieces of equipment and some free weights. I would recommend this hotel as it is small and friendly despite its 'Art Hotel' tag, is centrally located and it has all the facilities you need.
