Salamis Ruins

A poster of the ruins of the ancient town of Salamis, Northern Cyprus, seen on a tourism fair in 1998, first brought my attention to the part of the world as a possible holiday destination. I booked a 1 week holiday in the neighbourhood of Salamis, was smitten by the country, met my - now ... Read review

Amazing grace

Advantages: Very well preserved ruins, impressive scenery
Disadvantages: Lack of information material and sign-posting on the site

...
How to reach Salamis ?
==================

If you are staying either in Magosa (Famagusta), the Greek part of Cyprus or in Girne (Kyrenia) you will approach Salamis from the south. It is situated about 8 km to the north of Magosa, right opposite to the entrance of the village Yeni Bogazici. The ruins are signposted with a brown arrow that reads "Salamis Haberleri" (Salamis ruins), but this sign is usually halfway ...
...To find the entrance to Salamis you will have to make your way around the restaurant.

What is it all about ?
================

Salamis, not to be mixed up with the island Salamis in the Saronic Gulf where the Greeks and the Persians fought their famous battle in 480 BC, was an important harbour town and city kingdom.
It is situated near Enkomi (Tuzla), the former main trading centre of Alasyia ... more

Ruined? Looks pretty damn good to me.

Advantages: History at your fingertips
Disadvantages: Transport isnt great/lack of amenity at site

WHAT AND WHERE IS SALAMIS AND WHY WAS IT RUINED? The ancient city of Salamis was at one time (about 2000 years ago) the capital of Cyprus. As you may be aware Cyprus, sitting in the middle of the medeteranean, has been a stepping off post for most invasions in the area and has itself been occupied by the Romans, Assyrians, Egyptians and Persians to name but a few. In fact the ownership of Cyprus is still in dispute with the Turks still controlling ...
...before. The highlights of Salamis are (tick them off as you walk around) 1. Gymnasium and Baths 2. Theatre 3. Roman Villa 4. Kampanopetra Basilica 5. Ayios Epiphanios Basilica 6. Agora (stone Forum) - meeting and market place 7. Temple of Zeus - Roman period temple 8. Water Resevoir - roman water system inc 50km aqueduct!! It was not till about 674 AD when another Arab invasion brought about the destruction of the entire city that the inhabitants ...

Northern Cyprus one of the last unspoilt places

Advantages: Very friendly locals fantastic historical sites
Disadvantages: Difficult to get to

I went to North Cyprus in January after a 15 year break, although Kyrenia is a little more built up the rest of the north is little changed. It costs around £200 for a return ticket which includes a 45 minute stop over in Turkey as there are no direct flights due to the non recognition of the the Norths government. I stayed at long beach near Salamis, you need to spend at least half a day in the ruins and remember to take water with you as there is only a cafe outside of the ruins. The ruins are amazing and you can wander among the builds and actually touch things. Famagusta was a short drive away and is good for shopping and such things as Turkish Delight. One of the things I always look for in Turkish areas is a water pipe cafe so that i can enjoy the the fruit tobacco smokes which take about an hour. Usually you take apple tea ...

Review of Famagusta (Gazimagusa)

Going, going?.

Advantages: Ruins (and scenery, and wild flowers in Spring)
Disadvantages: Ruined (or on the way to becoming so)

impressive is the complex at Salamis, a ruined city beside the sea that flourished intermittently under various occupants for about fifteen hundred years from 1000BC onwards. A jumble of eclectic relics dating from all these periods remains; fascinating to wander around trying to distinguish one from another, and fascinating to reflect that the first were already as old when the last were built as the last ones are today. Most notable are the Byzantine gymnasium with its keynote upright marble columns and adjacent bath-house, and the Roman theatre, partly reconstructed on a much reduced scale; the original had fifty tiers of stone seats and could hold an audience of 15,000. How many modern theatres can match that? There are some fine Roman mosaics here too, as there are at Soli at the other end of the island. If I listed all ...

Review of Northern Cyprus

A gem at the verge of destruction

Advantages: Very friendly locals, great sightseeing and unspoilt beaches
Disadvantages: Lots of developing going on, a bit complicated to get there

find in some of the English Cypriot enclaves , let's say Haringey in London, in one street. The stallholder at the fair enriched my knowledge a bit, confirmed that it would be absolutely safe to holiday there and showed me some wonderful pictures of nearly deserted beaches and vast amounts of ancient ruins to explore. Well, I like unusual destinations for my holidays and she had me convinced. Booking was easy, I opted for a 7 nights stay in a hotel near Famagusta and right next to the ruins of the ancient town Salamis. A few weeks later it was time to pack my bags - little did I know that I would soon be packing much more, as I moved to Northern Cyprus less then a year from then on. The journey wasn't quite as straightforward, as it would have been to the recognized official Cyprus and was only the first hindsight that this ...
