Travelling to all corners of the world gets easier and easier. We live in a global village, but how well do we know and understand each other? I thought that you (the British) were cool and reserved, but, fortunately, I do not believe in stereotypes now, so I don’t think that the great topic of conversation between strangers in Britain is the weather –unemotional and impersonal- (for example). But, do British tourists know where they are when they come to Salou?…

### WHAT IS SALOU??? ###

Salou, my birthplace, is a gorgeous city. It is a holiday destination and reference point, concentrating the majority of the basic tourism industry infrastructure in the Tarragona coast (South Catalonia), a tourist and residential city that has consolidated its capital role as the leisure and service centre of the ‘Costa Daurada’, (Catalan for ‘Golden Coast’), through the diversity of its offer and the quality and quantity of its tourism facilities.

### Ok, but Salou is a SPANISH CITY, isn’t it??? ###

Many people, especially the British, think that Spain is only ONE nation, but they (you) are wrong. Catalonia is a different nation (Independentists say Catalonia is not Spain) and we have a political autonomy. - "The Generalitat is the institution in which the self-government of Catalonia is politically organised. The Generalitat's powers are designated by the Constitution (Spanish Constitution 1978), the current Statute and the people" - points two and three, of article One of the general dispositions of the Statute of Catalonia.-

~Is Salou a Spanish city? -Yes, it is- or -No, it isn’t- (Both answers are right)
~Is Salou a Catalan city? Yes, it is, of course. (The best answer ;-D)

### Well, but you speak Spanish, don’t you??? ###

Yes, we do. I speak Catalan (my mother tongue), Spanish, some English (I must apologise for my English) and German. Under the Spanish Constitution, the Catalan language and two languages more (Galician and Basque) are official languages and enjoy the same status as Spanish in the autonomous regions in which they are spoken. These languages are also known as ‘coofficial languages’ to show they enjoy equal status with Spanish. The regional governments actively promote their use through the media and the education system.

### Catalan language, what’s that? ###

Well, Catalan is one of the group of western neo-Latin languages, together with Spanish, Portuguese and French, the most widely spoken languages in the same family. Catalan is spoken in a large area (68,000 km2) in the east of Spain (Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Valencia, an area in Aragon bordering on Catalonia, Andorra, the south of France (North Catalonia – the Department of Pyrénées Orientales) and in the Sardinian (Italy) city of l'Alguer (Alghero).

During the first 30 years of the 20th century, Catalonia went through a period of political fervour, culminating in the recovery of a degree of political power in the Generalitat (the Government of Catalonia) during the 1930s. During the Second Republic (1931-1939), Catalan was restored to its official language status, which it had lost in the 18th century.

However, this promising future was checked by the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and its consequences. The use of Catalan in public was forbidden and the language retreated into the home.

Ever since the restoration of democratic institutions (Spanish Constitution, 1978; Statute of Catalonia, 1979), there has been a process to re-establish the use of Catalan.

### Ok, but I am not interested in Salou or Catalan History… Tell me something about discotheques, bars, pubs, … ###

xDDDDDD, Ok… Salou and many other towns in the ‘Costa Daurada’ (La Pineda, Cambrils, Tarragona,…) have got a lot of discos, pubs, bars… Bars and pubs must close at 3 A.M. but discos can be opened until 6 or 7 A.M. Our nightlife is incredible!!!
Catalan or/and Spanish people (we ;-D) are very friendly, sociable and fun-loving, so… Don’t be reserved or serious here!!! (Do you agree with the saying ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do’? xDDDDD). Obviously, you will find stupid and disagreeable or unpleasant people, too, but it is an universal human feature, isn’t it? XDDDDDD. In summer (July-September), you will not find too much Catalan people here. We prefer to travel, to visit different countries. Many people from the south of Spain or Portugal come to work here (they are nice people, too… Don’t worry!!! XDDDDD)

The main attraction in Salou is the Universal Studios theme park, Port Aventura, the best European theme park (it’s better than EuroDisney/Paris, don’t you think so?). Enjoy it!!!

### Weather, beaches, sun,… ###

The ‘Costa Daurada’ (‘Daurada’ Catalan adjective, from Latin ‘Aurum’ = Gold) enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate characterised by a clear, sharp atmosphere and skies of intense blue.
Average temperatures are around 7 to 10º C in winter and 20 to 26º in summer (26-35º July and August).
Most of the rainfall is concentrated in spring and autumn, although short, heavy showers are not uncommon in summer. However, the rains in this area can be unpredictable and in some cases have reached 400 mm over a couple of days, or even in a few hours. But, the weather is fantastic, the sun shines every day on July and August (well, every day, except if it rains, of course xDDDDD)

Our BEACHES are incredible and, obviously, one of the best attractions of Salou and the ‘Costa Daurada’ (hence the importance of their care and maintenance-> millions of Euros/€). Most of the Catalan beaches (Costa Daurada and Costa Brava) have got the European Union Blue Flags, a high-quality award. The fine golden sand, the clear shallow waters, and their beauty continue to captivate the tourists that visit our coasts year after year.

What are you waiting for???? Come!!!… You will ENJOY IT!!!
