Salt Lake City

I visited Salt Lake City in 2002 with my friend, Melissa, who I met at University, and who I was staying with in Washington State at the time. Her aunt was having a mid life crisis after divorcing her husband at 50 something. Melissa's Dad decided it was a good idea if we went to visit ... Read review

The Mormon City.

Advantages: An insight into a different culture and way of life.
Disadvantages: Strict alcohol laws, religious touts galour

.../> I visited Salt Lake City in 2002 with my friend, Melissa, who I met at University, and who I was staying with in Washington State at the time. Her aunt was having a mid life crisis after divorcing her husband at 50 something. Melissa's Dad decided it was a good idea if we went to visit her 'to cheer her up' and paid for our flights for a three day trip. I wouldn't personally have chosen it as a 'must see' desination but it was a free trip! Salt ...

*** About Salt Lake City ***

Salt Lake City is the State Capital of Utah and is found, bang in the middle of the United States. Salt Lake City is best known as the international Headquarters the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) and has a population of around 180,000. The climate is very dry year round but it is very hot in the Summer and very cold in the winter. The main geographical feature is the huge ... more

Must correct some errors in the previous review

Advantages: Relatively inexpensive, beautiful surroundings
Disadvantages: Rather limited attractions if you are not an outdoors type

Please just chalk this up to local pride, but the previous reviewer was not entirely accurate in his descriptions of visiting certain areas of the city and what goes on in them. Regarding the consumption of alcohol beyond beer, it is available at numerous state-run liquor stores around the city and at dozens of restaurants. It is true that there are no "bars" or pubs in the sense that you can go in and order stronger alcoholic drinks. These are private ...
...anyone else entering who is a member to "sponsor" them. No fee is charged to visitors. Regarding caffeine, it's completely untrue that there are areas of the city downtown where soft drinks like Coke are not allowed (except perhaps within Temple Square itself, but even then unless it's in an obvious can no one will care). It's simple to buy coffee in the mall food court across the street from the temple itself! Regarding entering temples and visiting ...

Landing in Salt Lake City?

Advantages: Close to the airport, clean
Disadvantages: No breakfast, road noise

the slightest. The room had a huge shower in the bathroom, but no bath. The towels provided were a little on the small side, but the were two each and face cloths. There was also a bar of soap each, an ice bucket. We had a queen room, which has one double bed, and a table and chairs. There were coat hangers and a suitcase rack. The TV had only 7 or 8 channels, very few for the US. The room was however spotlessly clean. Having drunk our complimentary coffee we headed into Salt Lake City, and were disappointed with the choice, our first morning in the USA and we wanted steak and eggs, we ended up with some crackers and milk from the 7eleven. It is worth knowing, if you are staying two or more nights, as we were, that the keycards are programmed to decode daily and have to be reactivated. When we did manage to return to our room the bed had ...

A Blue (Potato) Chip Airline Experience

Advantages: An All Around Good Experience
Disadvantages: They Don't Fly To All The Places I Want To Visit

I'd been aware of JetBlue for quite a while and had heard mainly good things about them so when we decided to add a side-trip from Utah to Los Angeles it seemed like a chance to give them a try..... especially as their fares were so much lower than the legacy airlines. We checked in on-line for our first flight from Salt Lake City to Long Beach and simply had to drop our bags off at the desk. Simple-or would have been had the desk been manned but there was no-one in sight-just a note saying "back at 3pm" a mere 45 mins before takeoff. The staff were pleasant-even if they made us repack as we were over the weight limit. As we had booked before the new charges for luggage came in we weren't charged despite having luggage for a three week trip. Down to the gate and our next surprise-a smoking room. Most airports no longer have these ...

Beautiful West Yellowstone

Advantages: beautiful surroundings, lovely climate
Disadvantages: quite a distance from Heathrow

I flew in to West Yellowstone, Montana in July from London Heathrow. We had to fly to Vancouver and then to Salt Lake City and then connect to West Yellowstone. It was definitely worth it. The temperature was up to 102F although at night time it was comfortable and easy to sleep in as it was not very humid. there is a public library in West Yellowstone with free internet access, all you pay for is the pages you choose to print. There is also a wide range of magazines and books available. There is a large range of restaurants to eat in. The best we found was Pete's Pizza Place which as the name suggests serves pizzas - the best in town. It is competitively priced and the staff are exceedingly friendly and the pizza is always cooked to perfection. The drinking age in Montana is 21 so be aware if you are a European as it may be ...
