The hills are alive with the Sound of Music

Advantages: Great way to see Salzburg sites
Disadvantages: None

...a tour on the Original Sound of Music Tour especially if you are a fan of the 42 year old movie. MOVIE VERSES REALITY... It is a good way to see the main city attractions and to get out into the mountains while learning how the movie was made and the differences from the original von Trapp families life experience and to see what director Robert Wise and composers Rogers and Hammerstein did to their story. For me the Original Sound of Music Tour ...
...movies which the Broadway ''The Sound of Music ''stage show was based on - one of them being ''The Story of the Trapp Family Singers'' by Maria von Trapp. Then of course along came a movie and it was pepped up somewhat to meet box office attraction and to spin a good story. For political reasons it never made it to Austria for decades. Some other movie differences: she said the real von Trapp children took to the new governess, a nun called Maria, ...

Salzburg Salt Mines

Advantages: Excellent value for money, interesting, good fun
Disadvantages: A little bit out of town

...my boyfriend and I visited Salzburg in Austria, we decided to take a trip to see the Salt Mines. Getting there was very simple when using the Salzburg card and this also mean that the transport was free too (as the Salzburg Card cover this!). Arriving At The Salt Mines Once you arrive at the Salt Mines, which are well signposted, you need to book in at the reception. You pay here and the price was about £3 each which was very reasonable. Once you ...
...boat ride which I felt made the trip more enjoyable for children who might find the history stuff a bit boring. This is a popular attraction in Salzburg so we expected it to be quite expensive but it wasn't, even the photos at the end were good value for money. ...

Fortress With A View Worth Walking To!!

Advantages: Beautiful views, educational, reasonable prices
Disadvantages: not very disabled friendly

...see the whole area around Salzburg and the Salzach River very well so any invaders would be spotted quickly. The first documented Castle to be built on the Mountain was between the years of 1060 and 1088 but this was little more than a Bailey with a wooden wall. The main four towers were added between the years 1461 and 1466 and also the outer wall as it can be seen today. Continuous building additions were carried out over the following centuries, ...
...cars when in operation), The Salzburg card also allows you to use the very efficient tram system Salzburg has in place, free of charge so if your staying away from the main city, this card can also be used for free transfers to the main town where the Fortress is located. The cost without the Salzburg card is 10 euros for adults and 5.70 euros for children, so I would recommend getting the Salzburg card as this can be used at many other attractions ...

Review of Salzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg), Salzburg

"St. Francis Church" Salzburg, Austria

Advantages: One of the oldest churches of Salzburg
Disadvantages: -

"Franziskanerkirche" in Salzburg is special in the history of European architecture. It is one of the oldest churches of Salzburg. In the year 774 this church was first mentioned. At that time it was a baptistery and used to be part of St. Peter Monastery. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In the year 1139 it became a parish church, but this church was one out of six churches (including the famous Salzburg Cathedral) which burnt down in the year ...
...but only part of this is now still remaining. In the year 1408 it was rebuilt yet again. The choir in its present form (except, of course, for the decorative additions made in the baroque period) acts as a centralizing space which unites and harmonizes with the late Romanesque nave. It is known that the choir was still under construction in 1422 and in 1429. Documentation of the dedications of the altars (e.g. the choir altar in 1460) in the mid-15th ...
