I am happy to write a review about Salzburg - the town i lived for 21 years.
Salzburg used to be my home before i moved to the UK so i know lots about this very pretty part of Austria.
There are so many things to see that you certainly won't get bored on a holiday in this town.
Let's see what Salzburg is famous for:
1. "The Sound of Music"
One of the most successful musicals of all times was shot in this town. Remember Julie Andrews and the "Van Trap" kids singing "The Hills are alive" and "The Sound of Music".
Take a tour and see the breathtaking countryside, the famous pavillion where the romantic song "I
am 16 going on 17" was filmed.
Felsenreitschule: Here, the Trapp Family performed its farewell song and Baron von Trapp sang Edelweiss
Visit "Mirabell Gardens" and Mirabell Palace where Maria and the children sang 'Do-Re-Mi'.
Mirabell palace is also famous when it comes to WEDDINGS. It is said that one of the marbleregister office is one of the most stunning places to get married in.
Plenty of guided, english/italian/french speaking "Sound of Music" tours are offered throughout the city!
2. WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART
Salzburg's most famous son - and genius of classical music!
Mozart was born in a little house right in the heart of the city. Today the rooms once occupied by the Mozart family house a museum. (You will find this building in "Getreidegasse".)
3.) "Getreidegasse"
The charm of the Getreidegasse, probably Salzburg's most famous shopping lane, is not only generated by the high, narrow houses tightly nestled together, the enticing shops and the wrought iron guild signs, but also to the romantic passageways and courtyards.
The name "Getreidegasse" underwent an interesting transformation. Initially it was known as Trabegasse, Trabgasse or Travgasse, derived from "traben" (to trot). Later it transmuted to Tragasse, Traidgasse, Getreidgasse and finally to Getreidegasse. Thus, the street originally had nothing to do with cereal (Getreide).
4. HELLBRUNN - Palace and trick fountains
In 1612, only a few months after ascending the throne, Salzburg's Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus von Hohenems commissioned a country residence to be built at the foot of the well-watered Hellbrunn Mountain.
Water was the central theme in the palace's design. It is most famous for it's trick fountains. A great place to visit - especially if you have kids. Make sure you visit on a sunny day or else take a change of clothing with you!
5. CHRISTKINDLMARKT
This is the famous Christmas Market on Mozart Square, right in the heart of the city.
It is usually on from the beginning of December until Christmas Eve, 24.12. Attention - as the Austrians celebrate Christmas on the 24th the market will shut early that day!!
6. PERCHTEN + KRAMPUS
Also something you will only see during the Christmas period. Young men wearing grim masks, fur outfits and heavy bells. The Krampusses lumber through the streets with whips in hand, causing a great deal of commotion among the onlookers. Krampusses and their close relatives, the Perchten, are a popular custom throughout the Alpine countries.
7. NIGHTLIFE
The nightlife is busy, mainly for young people although we have some really lovely pubs (incl. irish pubs "Shamrock or O'Malley's") where you will feel very welcome.
The RUDOLFSKAI is definitely a night owl venue! Also the scene around Gstättengasse is worth a visit.
What are the people like?
The Austrians are a friendly nation. They will welcome you without a doubt. Salzburg's youth can sometimes come across a bit "cliquey" but they seem to have a "thing" especially for the British (and yes i am talking from experience!).
How do we get there???
Your easiest option is to fly there. Ryanair is flying from London Stansted right into the city. For bargain prices too.
You could also travel by ferry + car. Depending on where you live in the UK this journey could take up to 24 hours.
Salzburg is definately worth a visit. If summer if winter - it is a great place to be!!
If you would like to have more info please feel free to leave me a note in my guestbook!
