In the words of the song - 'I left my heart in San Francisco' It just happens to be my favourite city in the world, though living in the UK my visits there are sadly limited. A lot has been written about the city, but you really have to see it for yourself to breathe in the atmosphere - Chinatown, the cable cars, Alcatraz etc etc. There are plenty of hotels/motels to suit everyone's wallet, but I would recommend staying in the Union Square vicinity, though understandably, the accomodation is a little more expensive. The benefits are, however, that everything is virtually on your doorstep. Personally, I would not hire a car whilst I am in the city - driving up those hills is an absolute nightmare and you are likely to be 'cut up' by the cable cars. As with any other city, there are 'no go' areas and these should be avoided, particularly late at night. My particular highlight would have to be evening dinner at the Wharf and a midnight cable car trip back to my hotel. If you are visiting for a few days then make sure that you buy a 3/5 day pass for the cable car, which will also give you access to other local transport systems. Also, if you intend to visit Alcatraz - which is a must do - then book in advance.
