Tales of the City Break
Advantages: Good value for money, convenient location Disadvantages: Noisy heating, coffee issues
...San Francisco, staying in the Travelodge by the Bay for a second time. I would recommend this if, like me, you simply want somewhere which will be a good base to explore the city, and you’re happy to eat outside the hotel/motel.
I don't know what it would be like to stay there with kids but think that given its value for money, proximity to public transport and choice of rooms, it would probably be ok as a family option. Decisions, decisions – where ... ...blocks of Lombard Street. The Travelodge by the Bay is at 1450 Lombard Street, between Franklin and Van Ness. We ended up at this particular branch in March 2003 because it was one of the cheaper ones and a booklet listing all the Travelodges in the US and Canada indicated that it had won awards based on customer feedback. We found it a comfortable and convenient place to stay with friendly, helpful staff and someone always available. So when we ...

Paper plates & plastic cutlery (!)
Advantages: Not expensive Disadvantages: Staff not very helpful, not great location
...I stayed at the Best Western Hotel Americania in San Francisco earlier this year. I was on a business trip (on a budget) and stayed there for 2 nights.
The location of the hotel is just south of Market Street (in the SOMA district) which is described on one website as "a funky, lively, up-and-coming area of San Francisco". I would say that this is probably one of the slightly edgier areas of San Francisco, and being a visitor, you do stick out like ... ...to eat nearby, and how best to get up Fisherman's Wharf if I wanted.
The hotel is one of the cheaper options I found in San Francisco, although at $145 USD a night, I was hoping for something a little better. It's main disadvantage is it's location since it's not with the majority of hotels up near Fisherman's Wharf, and you do feel very conspicuous as a visitor to the city, which always makes me feel a bit vulnerable.
As a holiday hotel, and purely ...

A bit of old-fashioned glamor in the city
Advantages: Great location, excellent service, top-quality bed Disadvantages: Is downtown so not that quiet
...It is part of the Personality Hotels group, each of which is modeled on a different concept, the idea for Kensington Square in particular being traditional glamour, its slogan being "Luxury in the heart of the city". And luxurious it is indeed. We stayed for one night only, directly following on from a rather skanky beach front motel in Santa Cruz, so maybe our goalposts had been moved somewhat, but it really was everything you could ask from a hotel ... ...offer valet service parking on the premises for $35 per day.
LOBBY/WELCOME
The lobby looks impressive, all marble and polished brass, and although they do not have a person opening the door for guests, the front of house staff were extremely welcoming as soon as we approached. According to the website, "The Concierge Staff pride themselves on arranging entire itineraries from transportation to dinner reservations and theatre tickets". I suspect ...

Fantastic location, basic rooms
Advantages: LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION Disadvantages: basic room, no feeling of security in hotel
...the main reception of the holiday inn (nice building), but on getting our room keys we were told to cross the road to the Express building (carried mine and my daughters bags - no offers of help at all!)
On walking around the building, crossing the street and entering the other building you walk through a dennys (handy ) which is inside the reception area of sorts (The entrance is the same as dennys, however the walkway does allow you to go staright ... ...also stayed in a few Holiday Inns, but this one was the only one I didn't feel safe in - Imagine one of those dodgy thrillers, where you have two cops looking for a suspect in a dodgy apartment building somewhere random in America (you must have seen one of those movies!) Well getting back to the point that's how the lift and corridors seemed, dated, old, but generally clean. Well if you lived somewhere like that you'd want loads of security, The ...

Comfy Days by the Bay
Advantages: Clean, simple, cheap, good location Disadvantages: can be noisy in front of hotel rooms
...pleasent 6 nights in the Comfort Inn by the Bay in sunny San Francisco.
The building itself is typical of hotels within this chain, simple, basic, no frills, but comfortable and pleasent enough to stay in. The entrance lobby is not vast, but big enough that it can easily accomodate several groups of people as you wait to check in/check out, etc. It has a few casual sofas, some hardback chairs, payphones and plenty of leaflets and similar about all ... ...handy, and we found them very helpful. Being our first time abroad we where confused about the telephone codes and numbers, but they patiently went through it with us on more than one occasion!
There are only 2 lifts, which I must admit did prove to be a pain. We were on the ninth floor and sometimes seemed to wait for ever until one came up to our level, and even then, it was sometimes to full for us to get in. They did have stairs, but these were ...
