I would recommend this if, like me, you simply want somewhere which will be a good base to explore the city, and you’re happy to eat outside the hotel/motel. Paper plates & plastic cutlery (!)

Advantages: Not expensive
Disadvantages: Staff not very helpful, not great location

...I stayed at the Best Western Hotel Americania in San Francisco earlier this year. I was on a business trip (on a budget) and stayed there for 2 nights. The location of the hotel is just south of Market Street (in the SOMA district) which is described on one website as "a funky, lively, up-and-coming area of San Francisco". Review of Best Western Miyako Inn, San Francisco

A bit of old-fashioned glamor in the city

Advantages: Great location, excellent service, top-quality bed
Disadvantages: Is downtown so not that quiet

Fantastic location, basic rooms

Comfy Days by the Bay

Advantages: Clean, simple, cheap, good location
Disadvantages: can be noisy in front of hotel rooms

...pleasent 6 nights in the Comfort Inn by the Bay in sunny San Francisco. The building itself is typical of hotels within this chain, simple, basic, no frills, but comfortable and pleasent enough to stay in. The entrance lobby is not vast, but big enough that it can easily accomodate several groups of people as you wait to check in/check out, etc. It has a few casual sofas, some hardback chairs, payphones and plenty of leaflets and similar about all ...
