Pickwick Hotel, San Francisco
Advantages: Cheap, Convenient Disadvantages: Prehaps too far from Fishermans Wharf if only a stop-over break?
I stayed at the Pickwick with 3 friends in April 2007. It's a very pleasant hotel situated within walking distance of the cable car turnaround and Union Square, and can't be faulted for it's price given the fairly central location for shopping/business. It's probably about 20 minutes to Fishermans Wharf via cable car from here.
The general area felt safe at night, it was very, very quiet in terms of people being around - probably due to the fact ... ...few homeless people near the hotel, but having visited many cities on our US tour, it's pretty obvious that San Francisco is one of the worst hit places. It seems that someone wants a dollar every 50 yards in San Francisco.
The room which we had was situated at the rear of the building away from the road, so was quiet. Being an 'old' hotel dating back to the early 1900's, the rooms are all generally quite small and compact, which we were told about ...

Comfortable Hotel in the Centre of San Francisco
Advantages: Comfortable, Friendly, Good Facilities Disadvantages: Parking at the front of the hotel is sometimes difficult
We stayed at the Chancellor Hotel by accident! We had hotel vouchers for our visit to San Francisco but the hotel we stayed in on our first night was so awful (and in one of the more dangerous areas of the city - we heard that the street on which it was situated had the highest murder rate in San Francisco!) that we decided to ring San Francisco Reservations, a hotel broker mentioned in our guide book. Hotel brokers basically rent out hotel rooms ... ...San Francisco Reservations!
The Chancellor Hotel is right on Union Square in the centre of San Francisco and is convenient base for exploring San Francisco.
The only slight disadvantage is that, if you arrive by car, you have to find a place to park at the front of the hotel - this can be difficult as it is a busy area. Once you have parked and unloaded, one of the staff takes your car keys and drives your car away to the hotel parking garage which ...

Hitchcock's San Francisco Hideaway
Advantages: Excellent value for money, great location Disadvantages: Old fashioned style
...where we stayed at the York Hotel at 940 Sutter Street, just 4 blocks from the central Union Square area and only 2 blocks from the major transport stops at Powell Street.
History:
Built in the 1920s, the hotel still has many of its original features, including Bakerlite electrical fittings and ceramic solid baths. It also has a history. If you're a Hitchcock film fan you'll love the fact that Vertigo was filmed here and you will spot the square ... ...do your sightseeing from. The York Hotel is only 4 blocks from the central Union Square and 2 blocks from transport stops for the famous cable cars (and buses) at Powell Street. The number 2,3 and 4 buses also run along Sutter Street and stop right beside the hotel. Although located on a main street, the road gets pretty quiet at night time and is not noisy. There are some small shops (like a grocery store and a coffee shop) alongside the hotel which ...

The Dakota hotel: cheap hotel in the heart of San Francisco
Advantages: Cheap, clean and location, location, location! Disadvantages: old-fashioned, elevator from hell
...for work for 4.5 months. The first two week I spent in the Dakota Hotel, in search for a spot of my own.
Dakota hotel caught my eye for a number of reasons: the price and the location. Normally, you'd have to rob a bank or two to stay in a hotel in the heart of San Francisco for two weeks. Luckily, Dakota offered an attractive rate for long-term stays. I thought it would certainly be worth a look, given it's excellent location.
Location
... ...blocks from Union Square. In the street itself, there are a number of restaurants and a small supermarket. The hotel is on the edge of what are considered to be the good neighbourhoods in San Francisco. Two blocks down, you'll find the so-called Tenderloin- a place where you wouldn't want to be found dead, but probably might ifyou were to walk there alone at night. Ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but trust me: it is not the place to flaunt your ...

Nob Hill Motor Inn- don't be put off by the name!
Advantages: Centrally located, good facilities Disadvantages: Slightly pricey, but you pay for the location.
Well, this hotel was my introduction to California. I went on a fly drive in July with family and here was where we stayed on touchdown. I hadn't realised the airport was so far away from San Francisco itself, it was in San Bruno, further south. When we first got out and about the next morning, I realised we had made an excellent choice in this hotel because if you go to a walking city like San Francisco, you really want to be close to the main attractions, ... ...it. It's near enough to walk to Fishermen's Wharf and Pier 39. There was plenty of parking for the guests with cars - we picked ours up the day before travelling down the coast. And all the other things you come to expect of a good hotel were there: wifi (no good for me, I didn't take my laptop); cable tv with HBO channel in the rooms and a small fridge and microwave. I stayed in a room with two big double beds (what the American's call Queen beds). ...
