Go West to the Westin
Advantages: Gorgeous rooms and decor, friendly staff Disadvantages: Stay here for a treat as it is more expensive than other hotels.
...stay on our tour of the United States. Our first destination was to be San Francisco and we did quite a bit of research ourselves, as well as taking advice from our long haul specialist at Thomas Cook. We wanted something central, near to a tram stop for easy accessibility and exploration of the Wharf district, somewhere near some of the famous stores but most importantly, somewhere where the staff would make us feel special on our first couple of ... ...seemed to be the only hotel that met all those needs and I have to say we weren't disappointed one bit.
***The Location***
Union Square in San Francisco is the heart of the city and this is the only hotel that overlooks this beautiful area. The square is also surrounded by stores such as Saks and Macy's and has a main tramline stop that can take you down to Fisherman's Wharf area for a small fee. The hotel also has valet parking but this can be ...

Tales of the City Break
Advantages: Good value for money, convenient location Disadvantages: Noisy heating, coffee issues
...San Francisco, staying in the Travelodge by the Bay for a second time. I would recommend this if, like me, you simply want somewhere which will be a good base to explore the city, and you’re happy to eat outside the hotel/motel.
I don't know what it would be like to stay there with kids but think that given its value for money, proximity to public transport and choice of rooms, it would probably be ok as a family option. Decisions, decisions – where ... ...blocks of Lombard Street. The Travelodge by the Bay is at 1450 Lombard Street, between Franklin and Van Ness. We ended up at this particular branch in March 2003 because it was one of the cheaper ones and a booklet listing all the Travelodges in the US and Canada indicated that it had won awards based on customer feedback. We found it a comfortable and convenient place to stay with friendly, helpful staff and someone always available. So when we ...

Pickwick Hotel, San Francisco
Advantages: Cheap, Convenient Disadvantages: Prehaps too far from Fishermans Wharf if only a stop-over break?
I stayed at the Pickwick with 3 friends in April 2007. It's a very pleasant hotel situated within walking distance of the cable car turnaround and Union Square, and can't be faulted for it's price given the fairly central location for shopping/business. It's probably about 20 minutes to Fishermans Wharf via cable car from here.
The general area felt safe at night, it was very, very quiet in terms of people being around - probably due to the fact ... ...few homeless people near the hotel, but having visited many cities on our US tour, it's pretty obvious that San Francisco is one of the worst hit places. It seems that someone wants a dollar every 50 yards in San Francisco.
The room which we had was situated at the rear of the building away from the road, so was quiet. Being an 'old' hotel dating back to the early 1900's, the rooms are all generally quite small and compact, which we were told about ...

Need a place to stay in San Francisco?
Advantages: Good value, comfortable, close to attractions, great location Disadvantages: Basic, but not necessarily a disadvantage (see review)
The Castle Inn is a small B&B/motel and one of the best kept accommodation secrets in San Francisco. My wife and I stayed there for our belated honeymoon for just over a week in April this year, encouraged by all the great reviews we had seen on various websites. Whilst it can't compete with the likes of the Sheratons and upper-end Holiday Inns in the luxury stakes, it has plenty of its own plus points setting it apart from the more well known hotels.
... ...Castle Inn is its location - on Broadway in the Russian Hill district, it's set away from the main tourist hubs. Instead, you're right in with the locals and treated to a more natural SF, a world away from the city's most famous landmarks. Not that it's miles away from anywhere, mind - Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, the Financial district and Embarcadero, Telegraph Hill, Union Square, Yerba Buena Gardens, the Sony Metreon, Cannery Row ...

Comfortable Hotel in the Centre of San Francisco
Advantages: Comfortable, Friendly, Good Facilities Disadvantages: Parking at the front of the hotel is sometimes difficult
We stayed at the Chancellor Hotel by accident! We had hotel vouchers for our visit to San Francisco but the hotel we stayed in on our first night was so awful (and in one of the more dangerous areas of the city - we heard that the street on which it was situated had the highest murder rate in San Francisco!) that we decided to ring San Francisco Reservations, a hotel broker mentioned in our guide book. Hotel brokers basically rent out hotel rooms ... ...San Francisco Reservations!
The Chancellor Hotel is right on Union Square in the centre of San Francisco and is convenient base for exploring San Francisco.
The only slight disadvantage is that, if you arrive by car, you have to find a place to park at the front of the hotel - this can be difficult as it is a busy area. Once you have parked and unloaded, one of the staff takes your car keys and drives your car away to the hotel parking garage which ...
