Go West to the Westin

Advantages: Gorgeous rooms and decor, friendly staff
Disadvantages: Stay here for a treat as it is more expensive than other hotels.

...stay on our tour of the United States. Our first destination was to be San Francisco and we did quite a bit of research ourselves, as well as taking advice from our long haul specialist at Thomas Cook. We wanted something central, near to a tram stop for easy accessibility and exploration of the Wharf district, somewhere near some of the famous stores but most importantly, somewhere where the staff would make us feel special on our first couple of ...
...seemed to be the only hotel that met all those needs and I have to say we weren't disappointed one bit. ***The Location*** Union Square in San Francisco is the heart of the city and this is the only hotel that overlooks this beautiful area. The square is also surrounded by stores such as Saks and Macy's and has a main tramline stop that can take you down to Fisherman's Wharf area for a small fee. The hotel also has valet parking but this can be ...

Hotel Nikko

Advantages: Fantastic spec, high class hotel with excellent service
Disadvantages: Ever so slightly out of the way

The Hotel Nikko was one of the best I have visited in the US. We relocated to the Nikko, because our original hotel was right next to a tramline on a busy street and they were very unhelpful when we asked to move room. The contrast when we moved to the Nikko couldn't have been greater. It was like an oasis of calm in the middle of frenetic San Francisco. The staff were friendly and courteous and we spent a few very enjoyable days in and around ...
...touch. I think the hotel is Japanese owned, which would explain the decor. In addition, our room had great views over the city, even though the location is quite low down on the skyline. The only tiny drawback was that the location is slightly away from the main tourust areas. However, it is within easy walking distance of Union Square and no-one in their right mind would want to go to Fisherman's Wharf more than once, so I wouldn't count the location ...

First time I fell out of a bed!!!

Advantages: Great access to Powell Street cable cars
Disadvantages: Its not the closest to Fisherman's Wharf by any means!

...forward to staying at the Marriott upon my return to San Francisco from Yosemite. I had already spent 5 nights in a 2* near Union Square and has chosen to spend my final two nights at the Marriott as a treat. However, I was disappointed to find that it was probably one of the farthest hotels from Fisherman's Wharf when it came to the area - others were much closer. Also, for the first time in my life, I fell out of bed! The bed itself had a duvet ...
...the mattress. I rolled over on the first night, thinking I was turning onto more mattress, only to have it collapse underneath me and I landed on the floor!!! What a strange set-up! Free internet access was useful - even if only for 15 minutes at a time. The hotel has everything you expect from a 4* but others were closer - in fact, I think there was only a Travelodge further away! I would recommend, but with the caveat that there were others closer. ...

The Dakota hotel: cheap hotel in the heart of San Francisco

Advantages: Cheap, clean and location, location, location!
Disadvantages: old-fashioned, elevator from hell

...for work for 4.5 months. The first two week I spent in the Dakota Hotel, in search for a spot of my own. Dakota hotel caught my eye for a number of reasons: the price and the location. Normally, you'd have to rob a bank or two to stay in a hotel in the heart of San Francisco for two weeks. Luckily, Dakota offered an attractive rate for long-term stays. I thought it would certainly be worth a look, given it's excellent location. Location ...
...blocks from Union Square. In the street itself, there are a number of restaurants and a small supermarket. The hotel is on the edge of what are considered to be the good neighbourhoods in San Francisco. Two blocks down, you'll find the so-called Tenderloin- a place where you wouldn't want to be found dead, but probably might ifyou were to walk there alone at night. Ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but trust me: it is not the place to flaunt your ...

Nob Hill Motor Inn- don't be put off by the name!

Advantages: Centrally located, good facilities
Disadvantages: Slightly pricey, but you pay for the location.

Well, this hotel was my introduction to California. I went on a fly drive in July with family and here was where we stayed on touchdown. I hadn't realised the airport was so far away from San Francisco itself, it was in San Bruno, further south. When we first got out and about the next morning, I realised we had made an excellent choice in this hotel because if you go to a walking city like San Francisco, you really want to be close to the main attractions, ...
...it. It's near enough to walk to Fishermen's Wharf and Pier 39. There was plenty of parking for the guests with cars - we picked ours up the day before travelling down the coast. And all the other things you come to expect of a good hotel were there: wifi (no good for me, I didn't take my laptop); cable tv with HBO channel in the rooms and a small fridge and microwave. I stayed in a room with two big double beds (what the American's call Queen beds). ...
