The Clift, San Francisco
Advantages: Location, stylish Disadvantages: very thin walls between rooms
The Clift is a beautiful and stylish hotel. It houses the stunning Redwood Bar which has gorgoues cocktails and you're surrounded by grand wood panelling and very cool plasma screens. The hotel also has the Asia de cuba restaurant which is great and the portions are big enough to share, although I don't think its quite as good as London's Asia de Cuba.
The staff are also friendly as we had backpacks from our round the world trip and were treating ... ...5 star hotels would do.
On the downside, although the rooms very beautifully done with a lilac and cream colour scheme, the walls are VERY thin between the rooms which is shame - so you can hear your next door neighbour's TV and anything else they might be doing! ...

Paper plates & plastic cutlery (!)
Advantages: Not expensive Disadvantages: Staff not very helpful, not great location
...I stayed at the Best Western Hotel Americania in San Francisco earlier this year. I was on a business trip (on a budget) and stayed there for 2 nights.
The location of the hotel is just south of Market Street (in the SOMA district) which is described on one website as "a funky, lively, up-and-coming area of San Francisco". I would say that this is probably one of the slightly edgier areas of San Francisco, and being a visitor, you do stick out like ... ...to eat nearby, and how best to get up Fisherman's Wharf if I wanted.
The hotel is one of the cheaper options I found in San Francisco, although at $145 USD a night, I was hoping for something a little better. It's main disadvantage is it's location since it's not with the majority of hotels up near Fisherman's Wharf, and you do feel very conspicuous as a visitor to the city, which always makes me feel a bit vulnerable.
As a holiday hotel, and purely ...

A bit of old-fashioned glamor in the city
Advantages: Great location, excellent service, top-quality bed Disadvantages: Is downtown so not that quiet
...It is part of the Personality Hotels group, each of which is modeled on a different concept, the idea for Kensington Square in particular being traditional glamour, its slogan being "Luxury in the heart of the city". And luxurious it is indeed. We stayed for one night only, directly following on from a rather skanky beach front motel in Santa Cruz, so maybe our goalposts had been moved somewhat, but it really was everything you could ask from a hotel ... ...offer valet service parking on the premises for $35 per day.
LOBBY/WELCOME
The lobby looks impressive, all marble and polished brass, and although they do not have a person opening the door for guests, the front of house staff were extremely welcoming as soon as we approached. According to the website, "The Concierge Staff pride themselves on arranging entire itineraries from transportation to dinner reservations and theatre tickets". I suspect ...

Hotel Nikko
Advantages: Fantastic spec, high class hotel with excellent service Disadvantages: Ever so slightly out of the way
The Hotel Nikko was one of the best I have visited in the US.
We relocated to the Nikko, because our original hotel was right next to a tramline on a busy street and they were very unhelpful when we asked to move room.
The contrast when we moved to the Nikko couldn't have been greater. It was like an oasis of calm in the middle of frenetic San Francisco.
The staff were friendly and courteous and we spent a few very enjoyable days in and around ... ...touch. I think the hotel is Japanese owned, which would explain the decor. In addition, our room had great views over the city, even though the location is quite low down on the skyline.
The only tiny drawback was that the location is slightly away from the main tourust areas. However, it is within easy walking distance of Union Square and no-one in their right mind would want to go to Fisherman's Wharf more than once, so I wouldn't count the location ...

Hyatt is high on our list
Advantages: Close to the Airport, free shuttle Disadvantages: Rooms overlooking the Atrium can be noisy
...it came up with the Hyatt at a reasonable price. Hyatt's are usually four or five star luxury establishments, so I thought that $89 for the room was a good deal. I also happened to have a voucher for an upgrade to an executive room. So we booked.
The shuttles to the hotels are easy to find, and there is a staff member on duty who will tell you when the next shuttle to your hotel is due. We waited about 10 minutes. The bus goes to three hotels, arriving ... ...hotel, with 793 guest rooms on nine floors arranged around an internal atrium. Check-in time is 3 pm, while checkout is noon
The hotel has three restaurants, the Swiftwater Deli for breakfast, which serves Starbucks coffee, Knuckles Historical Sports Bar, which serves burgers, salads, sandwiches and snacks, and the Swiftwater Cafe, which offers Californian cuisine in a more formal setting.
The lobby is very luxurious, with lots of brass and wood. ...
