A good cheap option

Advantages: Price, location
Disadvantages: No breakfast, slightly grubby

The Grant Plaza Hotel in San Francisco is located at the gateway to the Chinatown area of the city, and is predominantly Chinese-run. It is a quiet, unassuming hotel, which is clean, basic and most importantly a cheap place to rest in a busy, expensive city! The rooms are accessed by elevator and a security door prevents any unwanted entry 24 hours. Many of the rooms face onto the street which can be very busy and therefore quite noisy. The rooms ...

Nob Hill Motor Inn- don't be put off by the name!

Advantages: Centrally located, good facilities
Disadvantages: Slightly pricey, but you pay for the location.

Well, this hotel was my introduction to California. I went on a fly drive in July with family and here was where we stayed on touchdown. I hadn't realised the airport was so far away from San Francisco itself, it was in San Bruno, further south. When we first got out and about the next morning, I realised we had made an excellent choice in this hotel because if you go to a walking city like San Francisco, you really want to be close to the main attractions, ...
...it. It's near enough to walk to Fishermen's Wharf and Pier 39. There was plenty of parking for the guests with cars - we picked ours up the day before travelling down the coast. And all the other things you come to expect of a good hotel were there: wifi (no good for me, I didn't take my laptop); cable tv with HBO channel in the rooms and a small fridge and microwave. Comfy Days by the Bay

Advantages: Clean, simple, cheap, good location
Disadvantages: can be noisy in front of hotel rooms

...pleasent 6 nights in the Comfort Inn by the Bay in sunny San Francisco. The building itself is typical of hotels within this chain, simple, basic, no frills, but comfortable and pleasent enough to stay in. The entrance lobby is not vast, but big enough that it can easily accomodate several groups of people as you wait to check in/check out, etc. It has a few casual sofas, some hardback chairs, payphones and plenty of leaflets and similar about all ...
...handy, and we found them very helpful. Being our first time abroad we where confused about the telephone codes and numbers, but they patiently went through it with us on more than one occasion! There are only 2 lifts, which I must admit did prove to be a pain. The Dakota hotel: cheap hotel in the heart of San Francisco

Advantages: Cheap, clean and location, location, location!
Disadvantages: old-fashioned, elevator from hell
