If you are going to San Francisco

Advantages: Location, value for money, free parking
Disadvantages: Noise

...day to kill in San Francisco (lucky me!) before catching an early morning flight, I needed a hotel, and decided to stay in town rather than near the airport. I searched on Expedia and found the Francisco Bay Inn. One of the features I was looking for was free parking, and the Francisco Bay offers it. There were cheaper options, but not when you add $10-$20 to park your car. Expedia gave me a rate of £39, prepaid, and I took it. Another advantage ...
...wireless broadband internet. The Francisco Bay also offer family suites and free tour pick up. Public transport is right at the door. One other thing, which is only temporary - they are busy renovating! Just after 5pm there began a great banging and thumping in the room above us. After a few minutes, I went up to see what was happening. Two workmen were dismantling the room! I went down to the office, and in fact met the chap who had checked us ...

A good cheap option

Advantages: Price, location
Disadvantages: No breakfast, slightly grubby

The Grant Plaza Hotel in San Francisco is located at the gateway to the Chinatown area of the city, and is predominantly Chinese-run. It is a quiet, unassuming hotel, which is clean, basic and most importantly a cheap place to rest in a busy, expensive city! The rooms are accessed by elevator and a security door prevents any unwanted entry 24 hours. Many of the rooms face onto the street which can be very busy and therefore quite noisy. The rooms ...
...exploring the city. Most rooms are en-suite with colour TV with cable. The service and staff is faultless, as you will find across the area. The Plaza hotel offers only bed (no breakfast), although there are many cafes locally which offer cheap food (and plenty of it!). (while there, do explore the Chinatown area - it's great for souveneir and gift shopping!) ...

The Clift, San Francisco

Advantages: Location, stylish
Disadvantages: very thin walls between rooms

The Clift is a beautiful and stylish hotel. It houses the stunning Redwood Bar which has gorgoues cocktails and you're surrounded by grand wood panelling and very cool plasma screens. The hotel also has the Asia de cuba restaurant which is great and the portions are big enough to share, although I don't think its quite as good as London's Asia de Cuba. The staff are also friendly as we had backpacks from our round the world trip and were treating ...
...5 star hotels would do. On the downside, although the rooms very beautifully done with a lilac and cream colour scheme, the walls are VERY thin between the rooms which is shame - so you can hear your next door neighbour's TV and anything else they might be doing! ...

Nob Hill Motor Inn- don't be put off by the name!

Advantages: Centrally located, good facilities
Disadvantages: Slightly pricey, but you pay for the location.

Well, this hotel was my introduction to California. I went on a fly drive in July with family and here was where we stayed on touchdown. I hadn't realised the airport was so far away from San Francisco itself, it was in San Bruno, further south. When we first got out and about the next morning, I realised we had made an excellent choice in this hotel because if you go to a walking city like San Francisco, you really want to be close to the main attractions, ...
...it. It's near enough to walk to Fishermen's Wharf and Pier 39. There was plenty of parking for the guests with cars - we picked ours up the day before travelling down the coast. And all the other things you come to expect of a good hotel were there: wifi (no good for me, I didn't take my laptop); cable tv with HBO channel in the rooms and a small fridge and microwave. I stayed in a room with two big double beds (what the American's call Queen beds). ...

Go West to the Westin

Advantages: Gorgeous rooms and decor, friendly staff
Disadvantages: Stay here for a treat as it is more expensive than other hotels.

...stay on our tour of the United States. Our first destination was to be San Francisco and we did quite a bit of research ourselves, as well as taking advice from our long haul specialist at Thomas Cook. We wanted something central, near to a tram stop for easy accessibility and exploration of the Wharf district, somewhere near some of the famous stores but most importantly, somewhere where the staff would make us feel special on our first couple of ...
...seemed to be the only hotel that met all those needs and I have to say we weren't disappointed one bit. ***The Location*** Union Square in San Francisco is the heart of the city and this is the only hotel that overlooks this beautiful area. The square is also surrounded by stores such as Saks and Macy's and has a main tramline stop that can take you down to Fisherman's Wharf area for a small fee. The hotel also has valet parking but this can be ...
