The Beautiful Girl and the Penis Bowl

Advantages: Good weather. And some different ice creams.
Disadvantages: Not much else

In total I spent 6 nights there, but only really 4 days due to flight times and travelling towards Arenal and back from the beach. This is still about 3 and a half days more than most people told me I would need, but I ignored them nonetheless, convinced that any capital city would have a fair few things to keep me entertained.

GETTING THERE AND AROUND
...a public bus back to San Jose from the beach resort of Quepos, and arrived at the Coca Cola Bus Terminal. Yep, that's really its name. This is just to the west of town, and only a few dollars in a taxi to most hotels. Unfortunately the 5 hour trip had not gone well - mid way, during a break for toilets / food, two of the group's backpacks were stolen, meaning they lost their cameras and all the photos of the trip. Luckily there were no passports ... more

a small city but a lively city

Advantages: restaurant, views
Disadvantages: crime

San Jose is a wonderful place, great scenery and lots of colour. There are many attractions. My personal favourite was the La Paz Waterfall gardens. It’s a series of trails through the forest to the waterfall. Lots of greenery, and very refreshing walking through the forest. The waterfall is a great place to take your pictures. There is also an orchid garden and a butterfly garden. I didn’t quite like the orchid gardens, but the butterfly garden ...
...about 800 different species. San Jose has quite a few interesting museums. One that I went to was Fidel Tristán Jade Museum which has the best Jade Collection in Costa Rica. Nightlife There are many bars open through the night. Each one is individual and plays its own chosen style of music. Some of them are: Café Loft – plays electronic and trance music and there’s usually a live DJ. Club Bash – plays techno and house music. This club is very ...

San Jose

Advantages: Good night life, relaxed.
Disadvantages: Crime, not much culture.

...my time in the capital, San jose, which is what I am writing about now. The city itslef is quite small for a capital city but it makes it easyto navigate (up to a point!!). San Jose is located right in the middle of the country in what is called the 'central valley' although it isn't actually a valley. The airport is in the north west of the city, actually outside San Jose. Actually most of the decent hotels are outside the center too. I cannot ...
...Rica! In the center of San Jose, some streets have names (like 4) and the others have numbers but as soon as you go out of the direct center you have addresses like this one (which was mine): In San Francisco of two rivers, from the shell garage, 300/400 meters south, caramel coloured house with white railings, and a palm tree outside. That was a quite simple one.. the are ones which include: 200 M north, 100 west, 50 north, 25 east!! basicaly ...

Get out of here and discover beautiful Costa Rica

Advantages: Friendly, small, interesting museums
Disadvantages: There are FAR better places in Costa Rica

...lot of time recently in San Jose, Costa Rica - what with spending time there on my gap year and going back to visit. This review will be about San Jose itself , but in my opinion, any tourist would be well advised to visit other places in Costa Rica (eg. coast, beaches, mountains). Many hotels in San Jose organise tours, so if you use San Jose as a base than that is fair enough! If you come to Costa Rica and only see San Jose, you will have really ...
...speak English as well. San Jose is quite polluted in the centre, and suffers from really horrendous snarled up traffic. However, the people are really friendly and in tourist areas there is quite a large police presence, including the newish police-on-bicycles, who are there to make you feel secure. Sights of San Jose: Museo de Oro - in the Plaza de la Cultura, this is an astounding museum of gold and Pre-Columbian civilization. It has some truly ...

Malpais & Montezuma...

Advantages: Lush jungle, beautfiul beaches & surf
Disadvantages: No nightlife...

For me Costa Rica was the Nicoya Peninsula. After making the journey up from San Jose via bus & ferry then bus again arriving in Montezuma at sunset was a sight for sore eyes. Lush jungle lines the long sandy beach. The sea here is rough with a heavy, dumping shore break, so not great for swimming. The only swimming pool (in 1999) is found nestled at the end of the beach at El Sano Banano. The small village of Montezuma is picturesque & friendly with a scattering of restaurants, bars & shops. The cleanliness of this resort is thanks, largley in part, to the American contingent who have made this place their home & in doing so have helped locals conserve a beautiful corner of Costa Rica. Venture an hour or two up the coast (you can hitch a ride in a pick up from the main town) & will find yourself at Malpais. This place is ...

Review of Nicoya Peninsula (Costa Rica)

Lie back on a deserted beach and think of England.

Advantages: Sun, Sea, Breathtaking beaches, Great diving and the Blue Bull Bar
Disadvantages: I don't live there....yet!

If you are to travel anywhere in your life, GO TO BOCAS DEL TORO, those images of a tranquil beach lying in a hammock and sipping a Pina Colada can be a reality. I Went to Panama last year on a four week expedition to Costa Rica and Panama being next door was our obvious choice for diving and relaxing. So flying into San Jose airport, which is an experience in itself as for some reason the planes (or our plane at least) liked to do summersaults in the turbelence, but dont let this put you off. I'd recommend staying in San Jose (or Panama city) for the night as the trip across the canal is an adventure to say the least, that and its the last McDonalds you'll see for a while, thank god! Anyway if your travelling across the border from San Jose id recommend paying one of the young lads $5 to carry ur bags across or jump in a mini bus ...

Review of Archipilago de Bocas del Toro (Panama)

Bus to the border from San Jose...

Advantages: Extremely cheap, friendly locals
Disadvantages: Isolated, not much to do,

Bocas del Toro: a one horse town, where you just imagine the tumble weed rolling down the main street. It seems not a lot happens here these days - you'll find a handful of dive centres but the aquatic life boast little more than sea slugs & is nothing to get excited about. Some of the locals will offer ot take you out on their boats to go snorkelling but even that requires a strong imagination. There is no beach so sunbathings' out too. Located on Panamas Western (Carribbean) coast, Bocas del Toro is a day & halfs' journey by bus/train/foot/boat from the Costa Rican capital San Jose. I visited the town in 1999 on a whirlwind tour of Central America as I was keen to get out of the sanitised/Americanised Costa Rica & explore a place with a little more culture & history. Sadly it was the furthest I ventured it into Panama proper ...
