Although Sandown is great for a day or evening out, it is also a good base to stay. There are lots of hotels, guesthouses and self catering options to choose from. If you're looking for a larger hotel, there are many dotted along the seafront and in the evenings, it is nice to glance into the windows and observe the dancing that is going on in the bar areas.

There are plenty of different things to do at Sandown, to keep the entire family amused.
On a lazy, warm Summer day, the beach is an ideal place to relax, watching the waves lapping onto the sandy beach. Or maybe for a more active beach experience, how about a game of rounders, football, bat and ball or frisbee on the beach??
For those shopaholics, there is a main high street, with a range of different shops to explore, although there are no major chains here. There is also a pretty good fish and chip shop along this street, which is well worth a visit. My tip is to take your fish and chips onto the beach promenade during a warm evening...Lovely!!
If you prefer a bit of gambling, the pier is well worth a visit, with an amusement arcade to suit all ages. Here you will find the usual fruit machines, but there is also a mini bowling alley, a restaurant, a take away wimpy and crazy golf. The crazy golf is worth a go, as it is built on several levels and has sound effects and flashing lights , making it even more tricky to concentrate!
For an indoor attraction, 'Dinosaur Isle' is worth a visit. Here you will find both replica and real dinosaur fossils, many of which have actually been found on the island and lots of life size dinosaur models. This attraction is very interesting and informative, although it is not massive and will probably only keep you amused for an hour or two. It also has an interesting shop to explore.
The Isle of Wight zoo is another attraction on the island that is worth a visit. I have not visited for many years, but we are intending to go in a couple of weeks time when we visit the island. Like many of the island attractions, the zoo is not massive and certainly not on the same scale as many of the zoos in England, but it is a great family attraction. The zoo is famous for its tigers.

I have never been to Sandown and felt that it was really packed, even in high season, but there is plenty to see and do and it has a nice, friendly feel.
I would definitely recommend that you visit Sandown during a trip to the Isle of Wight.
Advantages: clean beaches, carnivals, friendly people Disadvantages: It gets REALLY busy in the Summer - and expensive to get there
...the best thing about Sandown is its lack of chains - the only exception being a Woolies. In fact the Isle of Wight is not the best place to come if you are a dedicated shopoholic as even the main town (Newport) has very few big stores (although there is Gunwharf Quays and Southampton across the Solent which make great day trips). There are no McDonalds in the town (such a nice change - and if you are desperate there is one 10 minutes away in Ryde), ... ...is one night club in sandown - Colonel Bogey's. most people start the night in the pub above and then go down into the club.
Twice in the summer Sandown has their carnival and also their regatta. these are all a lot of fun and the carnival is one of the best on the island - definitely worth a look. there is also a cute little train which will take you round the town and up towards the zoo. the drivers are some of the friendliest people i know and ...

Advantages: the beaches and the town Disadvantages: can be slightly messy on the beaches
...are nice and well kept.
Sandown is one of the best beaches on the island it has loads of shops on the fronts like cafes, toy shops, beach shops and cheep shops. there are loads of information offices so it makes it easier for you to find your way round, you have banks that are near by and you have also got a town.
the town is very nice and has plenty of great shops in actual fact its just like your own town with your normal shops there is a Summerfield's ... ...everything in, wooden shops, picture shops, flower shops, glass shops a much , much more.
The pubs sell the most amazing foods ever, the one I used to go to a lot was the one which is opposite the beach to get in you go through the town and the prawn baquets are to die for. Its quiet clean and has a great view, as do the coffee shops, fish and chip shops and the ice-cream shops along the sea front.
The beaches are huge and long and make a lovely ...

...is a 15-minute walk from Sandown (a 5 minute train ride 80p! or a 12 minute traffic jammed bus ride for 50p). I grew up in Lake but really, Lake is so small it is just another part of Sandown. I went to Sandown High School which funnily enough is in Lake!!! Now I live and work in Sandown.
It is a funny place the island, like mainland Britain 50 years ago. Just post war. However, it's nice that way. I lead a pretty laid back kinda life and so do ... ...you expect to come to Sandown for shopping think again. You will be able to get loads of souvenirs as there are about a dozen gift shops selling Isle of Wight tea towels, mugs and the usual holiday tokens.
Another attraction is the pier that comes off the esplanade. It has a fishing area right out at sea, a dodgems and bumpy slide for kids. And there is a massive indoor area full of ten-pin bowling, crazy golf and lots of arcade machines. It's pretty ...

...Tiger and cat sanctuary at Sandown is good to visit. It is the Island's only seaside Zoo. It is located on the Eastern side of the Island, overlooking Sandown Bay's beautiful seafront, with secure, sandy beaches and walks. Sandown is markedly sign posted from all the main town & ferry terminals. For people travelling without their own transport, there is a bus facility throughout the majority of the Island to Sandown town centre. There is also a ... ...regular service, bringing visitors from Sandown to the Zoo Entrance every day. There is free coach & car parking with a kiddies play area, although there is no restaurant only a kiosk to get hot & cold foods. There are demonstrations which go on at different times of the day about the tigers, Lemurs, and reptiles that live there. About two hours visiting time for the zoo. Opening Hours
