I stopped off at Santa Cruz for 4 days whilst on a west coast tour in June. The atmosphere of the town is very relaxed and laid back but this doesn't mean that there aren't a lot of activities to take part in. California has a reputation as one of the best surfing spots in the world and Santa Cruz as one of the best surfing spots in California. For waves, the legendary Steamer Lane, a point break next to the main pier provides smooth breaking waves. In summer gentle waves make it the perfect spot for beginners to take out a rental board, while in winter larger swells attract surfers from all over the world. You could alternatively hire a mountain bike and cycle along one of the many trails carved through ancient redwood forests. If relaxing in the sun is more your style there are several glorious beaches within 10 minutes drive of Santa Cruz or you could opt for the main beach and watch bronzed Californians playing volleyball all day long. The staff at the tourist information office are very helpful but often not in the office. This means they are probably roaming the main street chatting to visitors so I would advise checking back at the office 15 minutes later.
