Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife

When we stayed in Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife in December two years ago, I went on a coach tour to the north east of the island including the capital Santa Cruz. Advantages: a lot to see
Disadvantages: I didn't find any.

...the island including the capital Santa Cruz. I booked it with the rep of our travel organisation, the actual tour operators are always local firms. It doesn’t make sense if I give you the name of the firm we went with as you can’t choose one, you have to take the one your travel organisation works with. I guess they’re all more or less alike and a tour’s success depends on the guide you get.

Our first stop was the auditorium in Santa ...
...the little I saw of Santa Cruz rather pleasant, our guide called the city with more than 220,000 inhabitants, the economic and industrial centre of the Canary Islands, “cosy and not at all aggressive“, I‘d like to believe he‘s right, pity that none of the big cruise ships was lying in the harbour while we were there.

It’s not possible to get to the water in the city proper, in the south is an oil refinery, then comes the harbour for ... more

Sun, Sea and Sangria

Advantages: Virtual year round sunshine and only 4 hours away
Disadvantages: Some areas rather built up - full of fish and chip shops, singlets and neon signs

, as well as the quieter calmer areas, and all in all, I thoroughly recommend any or all of the islands as a year round resort well worth visiting. ~~ HISTORY ~~ The Canary Islands are situated in the Atlantic Ocean, south west of Spain and north-west of Africa (just by Morocco). Seven islands make up the Canary Islands archipelago. All of them are the tips of hundreds of volcanoes that first erupted from the Atlantic 14 million years ago. Originally inhabited by Guanches, Spanish explorers discovered and claimed the islands for Spain back in the 14th/15th centuries. Nowadays, the islands are home to a population of around 1.84 million and remain part of Spain. The Canaries are divided in two main provinces:- The Western Islands are known as the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and are made up of the islands of Tenerife, La Palma ...

Review of General: Canary Islands

Oh Island in the Sun

Advantages: The Weather, it is 'cheap' but not too 'cheerful'!
Disadvantages: Veronica's!

I love Tenerife. For me a visit there is like home from home. I have been visiting the island for the past ten years. The island and its people are in my blood. This opinion is a brief description of areas that I personally find interesting. I have missed out many of the tourist areas and settlements in the south of the island and instead concentrated on areas I visited during my last holiday. ** Background** The Western islands of the Canary Islands form the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife; the capital is Santa Cruz. The Western Islands contain Tenerife (794 sq.miles) La Palma (281 sq.miles), Gomera (146 sq.miles) Hierro (107 sq.miles). The largest volume of people permanently living on Tenerife is around 600,000. The density of population on Tenerife is 743 to the square mile. The area with the largest concentration ...

Review of Tenerife (Spain)

The best kept secret in Tenerife

Advantages: Quiet, picturesque and relatively unspoiled. Year round sunshine.
Disadvantages: Very hilly. Parking can be a problem. Maybe too quiet for some. Small beach.

Tenerife is the largest and the second most popular of the Canary Islands. Sadly, nowadays Tenerife has developed a bit of a reputation for pubs, clubs and chavs. Luckily, the north (Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz de Tenerife) of the island still retains a better reputation, being rather more picturesque and lush. However, the south of the island is a lot more built up, with the most popular southern resorts being Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos, both of which are fairly teaming with nightclubs, high rise hotels, neon signage and fast food eateries. To be frank, Playa de la Americas is rather dirty and seedy looking in places - it's really seen better days. Los Cristianos (once a quiet and sleepy fishing village) is a little newer and shinier. However, both resorts are loud, brash and overcrowded. Yet if you are after ...
